Materials: Invisible Man texts, video, James Baldwin text Procedures: Warm Up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOxxPZgZZT8 Show clip of Harlem Riot 1943 intro Ken Burns Documentary (1:30) Pass out excerpt from James Baldwin Notes of A Native Son description of Harlem Riot Group Work: In groups, students will focus on one key aspect of Ch. 25 and answer questions to contribute to discussion Descriptions of Harlem: Compare and contrast descriptions from Baldwin and Ch. 25 What are the blacks in Harlem fighting against? How did the riot start? IM and Brotherhood involvement in riot: What does IM realize about how the riot was started? People say Ras began riot, but IM realizes it was the work of the Brotherhood (553) Why did the Brotherhood allow the fighting to begin? What was IMs role? Significance of Ras: Reread description of Ras and confrontation with IM (556) What is significant about how Ras is dressed? Why does Ras want to kill IM? IM transformation/realizations: Why is IM unable to give a speech to calm the crowds down? What does IM realize about himself? (559) Falling down manhole: What is the significance of IM burning his papers after falling down the manhole? (568) What is the significance of the men who appear in IMs dream? What illusion is IM free of? Discussion: Groups will share answers and quotes from chapter Is this a satisfying conclusion to IMs character? Homework: Read Epilogue find a quote (passage, sentence, phrase) that you like Assessment: Participation in discussion, notes from reading homework, collaboration with classmates, answering of textbased questions
