Lesson # 2 Date and Time of Lesson: 02/26/2014

Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify the characteristics of 3-dimensional shapes including cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere. Alignment with Standards: MA.K.K.G.1- Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. MA.K.K.G.2- Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. MA.K.K.G.3- identify shapes as two dimensional or three- dimensional. MA.K.K.G.4-Analyze and compare 2 & 3D shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts and other attributes. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students will have prior knowledge of 2-dimensional shapes in the environment in order to describe similarities between newly learned shapes. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Students will name multiple items in the environment that resemble the new shapes that they have learned. Challenging questions for higher level thinking: 1. How do you know that is the correct shape? 2. How did you decide which shape it was? 3. What objects look like this shape that we see every day? Use of Formative Assessment (TWS section 7) This assessment data will be used when students learn about new 3-dimensional shapes each day. The teacher and the students will create a chart and add to it each day that they learn about the 3dimensional shapes.

Students will be able to identify the characteristics of 3-dimensional shapes including cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere.

Accommodations: Students will be able to participate with the class as a whole. The daily review will help them with concepts they may struggle with. Students will come up with different items in the environment will help from peers. A chart will be created for students to refer to when completing their work. Songs will be used in order to introduce new shapes.

Materials: Chart Paper Marker Video- 3D shapes

Procedures: 1. Students will come to the carpet and sit quietly on their spots. 2. The teacher will play a video on 3-dimensional shapes. a. Schooltube.com 3. When the video is finished, the teacher will introduce a poem to the students about 3-dimensional shapes. a. 3D Shapes are fat not flat. A Cone is like a party hat. A Sphere is like a bouncy ball. A Prism is like a building tall. A Cylinder is like a can of pop. A Cube is like the dice you drop. 3D Shapes are here and there. 3D Shapes are everywhere. 4. After, the teacher will show models of each shape and explain how they look and have students identify different objects from their surroundings that look similar. 5. A chart will be created in order to identify a new shape each day and to list/draw objects that look similar. Activity Analysis: Video on 3D shapesthis video is used in order to introduce new 3D shapes to the students. Students enjoy watching videos and tend to pay more attention when watching a video. Technology that is used for this section is the Smartboard in order to watch the video. At this point, only the teacher will use the technology to turn the video on. 3D Charta chart will be created as a whole in order for students to identify their own objects that they know resemble the 3D shapes we have talked about. Students will enjoy listing items and they can always receive help from their peers. No technology will be used for this activity because a written/ drawn out chart is visually better for the students. References: 3d shapes poem. (n/a).
