The Escaped Prisoner

A man had been sentenced to prison for ten years. After one year, however, he escaped from prison, moved to a new area of the country, and took on the name of Mr Right. For eight years he worked hard, and gradually he saved enough money to buy his own business. He was fair to his customers, gave his employees top wages and gave most of his own profits to charity. He is currently married with two children. The community had benefitted tremendously from the charitable and community services of Mr Right. There is a suggestion from the influential community leaders that Mr Right should contest the position of Mayor of the town due to his integrity and leadership qualities. Recently one person by the name of Mr Left who used to be the neighbour of Mr Right prior to his arrest, recognized him as the man who had escaped from prison eight years before and whom the police had been looking for. He is also aware of the good deeds that Mr Right had made to the community and the economic benefits derived from his growing business. What should Mr Left do? Before deciding what Mr Left should do please answer the following questions. 1) Is Mr Left faced with a dilemma? If yes,What is the nature of dilemma faced by Mr Left? If not why? 2) What assumptions would you like to make on the case? 3) What principles should guide Mr Left in deciding what to do? 4) If you are Mr Left, would you report Mr Right to the police if your action will be known by the members of the community? 5) What questions would you like to have before making your decision? The deadline for submission is 16th February 2014. Late submissions will not be marked. Please email me at shamid@inceif.org or to En Rais at rais@inceif.org for clarification.
