Social Studies On Grade Level

Tuesday Lesson 2- Learning about our heritage and a Connecticut figures heritage.

Goal 2- Students will research facts about their heritage and country of origin as well as the heritage and country of origin of a Connecticut figure. Then they will present their research with the class. Cognitive Objectives: 2.1 Using the links provided students will create a project showing their heritage and country of origin using a checklist. 2.2. The students will present their projects using visual and spoken methods, with score of 3 or better on the rubric scale. Affective Objectives: 2.3 Students will provide feedback by using a knew and learned worksheet for each project. This will be evaluated using a checklist.

Resources/ Materials: 2 sheets of construction paper or 1 sheet of poster paper Scissors Glue Markers Colored pencils Knew/learned feedback sheet http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-map-viewer.html This site shows the countries profile, political map, and outline map.

http://www.town-usa.com/connecticut/ This site allows students shows a multi-level perspective of Connecticut and can narrow in to Groton.

Teaching Strategies/ Methods: 9:00-9:10 Students will be welcomed into the class and asked to hang up their coats and backpacks as well as hand in their homework. Their desks will in the U formation. Explain that today students will be researching their heritage and country of origin as well as a person from Connecticut. Then they will be constructing a short presentation which will be shared with the class. Each student will be given a piece of paper with the name of the person they will be researching in addition to researching their country of origin. 9:10-9:30 First give students a brief description of America, Connecticut, and Groton. Explaining that America is on the North American continent, it has a democratic government, has 50 states, and is the country we live in. Connecticut is one of the 50 states in America, we are located in the north east of the country, have 4 seasons, and is the state we live in. Finally, Groton is a town in Connecticut, it is the home of the first nuclear submarine, is located on the coast of Connecticut, and is the town where we live. Students will move to the computer workstations, then give a brief description of what is meant when they are asked to research a topic. When researching they are to use the three provided websites and a search engine for added information they are to research their countrys flag, location, population, imports, exports, festivals, famous people from there. Researching their Connecticut figure they will be responsible for who they are, what they are known for, when did they live, where are they from, why they are important. The information can be typed using Microsoft word doc. or can be hand written for the project. 9:30-9:45 Students will begin assembling their projects using classroom materials, and either 1 sheet of poster board or 2 sheets of constriction paper. They can cut and paste their Microsoft word docs. Or hand write their projects. 9:45-10:25

While each student is presenting the children in the audience will have been given a feedback sheet. A knew-learned feedback sheet and the sheets will be collected by me and reviewed then handed back to the presenter before they leave class. 10:25-10:30 Wrap up the class by congratulating all of the students of doing great work and research on their projects, and telling them how much you learned from their projects. Then pass back their feedback sheets including one from the teacher. Encourage them to have a great day and to be ready for an exciting day tomorrow.
