Summative Evaluation of Field Experience

ASSESSMENT, PLANNING AND INSTRUCTION Carly learned to develop meaningful and precise lesson plans during this practicum. Her lesson plans were available ahead of time to allow for feedback and editing. She was able to create lessons and activities that match the developmental level and attention span of the children. Carly used a variety of instructional strategies and groupings appropriate to the students' needs. She used creativity to engage the students, for example, posing as different characters. She used a variety of assessment strategies such as rubrics and checklists. Carly learned to take initiative in choosing the topics and resources needed to augment her lessons and meet curriculum expectations. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Carly developed positive relationships with all of the students in the class. Her organization and observation skills were evident as she quickly adopted the established routines of the classroom. Carly learned to prepare for lessons in advance to assist in smooth delivery of her lessons. Carly used positive class management strategies when dealing with individual students and the whole class. These included clapping techniques, warning colour cards and speaking with students when a misbehaviour occured. She became more assertive and confident in demonstrating effective techniques to handle off-task behaviours. UNDERSTANDING CURRICULUM AND THE LEARNER Carly is developing a good knowledge and understanding of the Ministry guidelines and Ontario curriculum. She demonstrated the ability to develop activities that were appropriate and covered the curriculum expectations of her math, science, social studies, physical education and language units. Carly integrated other subjects such as visual arts and drama into her lessons. She also used a variety of manipulatives, visual aids and technology in her lessons. Carly's lesson plans included accommodations such as scribing and peer support for those students in need.

DIVERSITY/EQUITY Carly was sincerely devoted to the success of all the students. She was sensitive to the various needs of the students in the class. She used modifications and accommodations to meet the needs of learners, recognizing the diversity of learning styles and abilities within the classroom. Carly integrated First Nations culture into her science unit on energy. PROFESSIONALISM Carly presented a professional manner at all times within the classroom and the school. She showed flexibility, adaptability and initiative. She sought advice and feedback regularly and actively participated in reflective practices to set goals for herself. Carly managed various transitions throughout the day, including entry and dismissal times. Carly demonstrated initiative by supporting a grade 4 class during their Scientist in the School workshop. She made a point of introducing herself to the staff and parents to establish a rapport during the practicum. INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL/COMMUNITY LIFE Carly attended staff meetings, participated in yard duty and accompanied the class on two excursions. She was actively involved in the Right to Play program and the school's Eco Club. She participated in a school-wide waste audit. Carly also visited other classrooms to further enhance her experiences e.g., music, library, grade 5 model classroom. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS Carly demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity and a sincere love of teaching. She was very dedicated and always put forth her best efforts in all of her endeavours. She had wonderful patience when dealing with the children and she always focused on the positive aspects of their accomplishments and behaviours. I wish her all the best in her teaching career.
