Psychoanalytic, Plot, and Narration of the Cask of Amontillado Edgar Allan Poe follows his usual writing tactics making it a very dark and horrific story between a wealthy respected man Fortunato, and the jealous Montresor who seeks revenge. His story The Cask of Amontillado will forever be one his greatest work. Seeing the story through the eyes of Montresor takes the reader into a horrific plot that would end with death. We learn the narrator has something personal against the wealthy and respected Fortunato. First person narration was the main way this literature was writtten. Understanding the narrator of this story is important to follow the path of the story. Montresor comes up with a devise plan to hurt Fortunato. Knowing that Fortunato is a fan of wine, Montresor tricks him by saying he found the rare amontillado wine. Without hesitation Fortunato follows Montresor to the catacombs under the city. At first its seems that Montresor is being kind to Fortunato, on the outside character Montresor is trying to convince Fortunato to a friendly walk to reach the precious wine amontillado but truthfully in the inside he has a twisted plot to murder him. Analyzing the psychoanalytic critism it is not hard to tell Montresor is dealing with a sort of mental illness. Dealing with the id, ed, and superego Montresor shows hes dealing with internal conflict. With so many twist and turns in The Cask of Amontillado, breaking down the plot structure helps the reader understand the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. This essay is mainly to inform how the story The Cask of Amontillado can be seeing through the eyes of a murder but to make the reader curious to why he felt the desire to kill.
