QSEN Education Project

By Connie Rose July 2013

Why Program is Needed

Alarming number of preventable deaths in hospitals (IOM, 1999) QSEN is designed to help nursing students improve quality and safety of care (Docksai & Sherwood, 2012)
QSEN Competencies Patient-centered care Evidence-based practice Teamwork & collaboration Quality improvement Informatics Safety

Why Program is Needed

U.S. accrediting bodies encouraging use of QSEN
National League of Nursing (NLN) American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN)
(Docksai & Sherwood, 2012)

Goal
Nursing faculty at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College will implement at least one teaching strategy found on the QSEN website or IHI Open School in each nursing course
(IHI, 2013; QSEN Institute, 2013)

Objectives
1. Nursing faculty at the project institution will attend an inservice providing an overview of QSEN and available resources

Objectives
2. Nursing faculty at the project institution will voice the importance of increasing the emphasis on QSEN competencies in each nursing course

Objectives
3. Faculty from each nursing course will review teaching resources on the QSEN website or IHI Open School and determine which one(s) will be most appropriate for the course

Objectives
4. Faculty from all courses will share which teaching strategies were chosen to ensure all QSEN competencies have been addressed

Delivery
A Power point presentation will guide the presentation.
Strengths and Weaknesses of PowerPoint Presentation STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES Lots of text slides can make presentation Can use charts, images, multimedia boring content, sound, etc... Computers can crash and networks can go Keep students motivated by adding down interrupting presentation or losing animations or funny slides to describe presentation topic Too easy to create too many slides Brief and to the point Not helpful with discussions Helps students to understand and make connections between concepts

Program Outline
II. Examine how QSEN competencies are currently part of each course
III.Present available resources
A. QSEN website (QSEN Institute, 2013)
1. Review competencies 2. Faculty resources
a. b. Learning modules Videos

B. Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School online assignments (IHI, 2013)

Program Outline
IV.Break into faculty course groups
A. Assist faculty in accessing learning modules on QSEN website B. Discuss which type of learning strategy would be best for each course (e.g. learning lab, simulation, clinical setting, classroom setting)

Program Outline
V. Bring faculty back together
A. Have each course group present the teaching strategy that will be used in their course B. Determine how the QSEN competencies can build from one course to the next C. Make sure all QSEN competencies have been covered in the curriculum

Evaluation of Program
Program: QSEN Education Project Logic Model

Inputs (Resources)
QSEN activities IHI Open School modules Conference room Computers Faculty Faculty time Faculty attitude Administrative support

Activities QSEN education class for faculty Power point presentation Video Discussion Faculty breakout sessions

Outputs
Faculty will choose an additional QSEN activity or IHI module to be incorporated in course

Outcomes
Faculty knowledge of QSEN will increase Faculty will expand the use of QSEN activities in each course

Impact
Students knowledge, skills, and attitude of QSEN competencies will increase as they progress through the nursing program

(W.K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004)
