Casey Rollins School Improvement Plan Reflection The school improvement plan for Costner starts out with

very general information about the School Improvement Team and with a list of the purpose, direction, and belief statements for the school as well as for Gaston County Schools. The School Improvement Team consists of one teacher per grade level, one assistant, one EC teacher, and three parents. The purpose of Costner is to prepare students for the 21st century and make them excited about learning. Costner believes that every child will be successful and that there is to be high expectations for every member of the Costner family. Costner believes in a safe, caring, and compassionate learning environment where collaboration among all staff members is most important. In line with this is Gaston Countys purpose which is to provide rigor, relevance, and relationships leading to globally competitive students. With all of this in mind, Costner has developed a plan that will lead to fulfilling these purposes. The first part of the school improvement plan is the character action plan. This aligns with Gaston County Schools goal five that states, Students will learn in a safe environment. The first part of this plan is to continue implementing PBIS, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, in K-5. They will monitor this by looking at discipline date as well as PBIS and MTSS committee minutes. Costner will also implement CHAMPS which is a class wide positive behavior support. This will be implemented in preK through fifth grade. This will also be monitored by looking at disciple data and PBIS and MTSS committee minutes. CHAMPS posters are posted throughout the school to remind students of the behavior expected from them. The next part of the plan is the technology action plan. This aligns with Gaston County Schools goal 2 that states, All students will demonstrate technology competencies. The strategy for this is the continue collaboration with the media coordinator, computer lab specialist

Casey Rollins technology and classroom teachers to integrate technology throughout the curriculum. One of the ways to monitor this is to review the weekly PLC minutes. This will help to determine when collaboration has taken place the how this resulted in student growth. The final part of the school improvement plan is centered on school achievement levels. For reading their goal is to increase the number of proficient students by 10%. Currently the schools reading proficiency is 77.1%. The baseline score for reading was 47%. There are two separate strategies that have been developed to help meet this goal. They will collect data from STAR reading and benchmarks to help plan for instruction and see what student may need extra help. Grades 4-5 will also keep a reading notebook to help track their progress. This strategy will be monitored monthly through PLC notebooks, benchmarks, STAR reading, and reading response journals. The next strategy is to continue implementing reader workshops in K-5 with emphasis on anecdotal notes and differentiated small group instruction. To monitor this strategy a closer look will be added to lesson plans, learning walks, anecdotal notes, and conferencing notebooks. The first benchmarking date on November 15 showed that fourth and fifth grade had an increase on their benchmarks and third, fourth, and fifth grade had an increase on their STAR reading test. In math Costners goal is to increase the number of proficient students by 10%. Currently the schools math proficiency is 82.5%. There are two strategies to help meet this goal. One of the strategies is to collect information form the STAR math tests and benchmarks to help guide instruction and set learning goals in classrooms. Fourth and fifth grade will also keep a math notebook to help track progress. This will be monitored monthly. Another strategy that will be used is to continue differentiated math groups in K-5 as well as keep anecdotal notes on each child. To monitor this strategy a closer look will be added to lesson plans, teacher evaluations,

Casey Rollins anecdotal notes, student portfolios, and STAR math. On the first benchmarking data, November 15, there was an increase in all grades except fifth. Since this is an area of concern their plan is to continue working on math vocabulary and creating anchor charts. It is important to be aware of this school improvement plan as a student teacher because now it is my responsibility to help fulfill these goals. One of the major things that is included in the school improvement is to continue to conference and keep anecdotal notes on each child. This will help because it lets you know where the student is and what they need help with. It is also a way to help differentiate instruction. During student teaching I will need to make sure that I continue doing all of the things to help make sure that by the end of the year Costner is able to increase the number of students in math and reading that are proficient by 10%.
