Unit/Theme: Causes of the Civil War


What would cause a country to go to war against itself?

Standard:
Colorado Model Content standard 4.2, 2.2

Content Objective (ACSD 14 Objectives):

Compare and contrast economic activities of the North and of the


South.

Describe how cultural and economic attributes characterize the


North and South as distinct regions.

Language Objective:
• Students will read a text and apply thinking by using “I wonder…” and “I think…”
sentences
• Students will either reword a piece of text or apply the text to the essential question

Student Outcomes (what should students know and be able to do?):


• Students will understand the economic differences between the
North and the South
• Students will use thinking skills to create a double entry diary
• Students will be able to manipulate Google Docs to create their
double entry diary

Lesson 1. Students will review key vocabulary and integrate it into


Sequence: previous lessons on the North and the South

2. Students will be assigned a small reading task for the


North and for the South

3. While reading, students will complete two of each, I


wonder… and I think… statements

4. Students will identify 1 sentence that was the most


interesting to them

5. Students will create a 2X2 table in Google Docs with


teacher guidance.

6. Students will write the sentence they identified into one


column and then either explain the quote or explain how
the quote answers the essential question
