Rachel Medina Mr. Bigelow English 10 April 9, 2014 Faith in the Night People all over the world definitely have different faiths and portrayals of faith. Their faith may be in someone or something. This faith usually keeps a person going or keeps them holding on to something important. Sometimes their belief may change by an event or over time. This happens to be the case in Night by Elie Wiesel. During the holocaust Elie has some changes in his faith of God, his father and the faith of his fellow inmates. Faith in God can help someone know that there is a master of the universe watching aand taking care of them. Elie once had faith in god because man comes closer to God though the questions he asks him (3). Wiesel shows that faith played a major role in his life. It helped him seek his ways and learn about himself. He portrays that God was always there for him when others werent. Elie thanked God in an improvised prayer for having created mud in his infinite and wondrous universe.(38) He shows that even on during the difficult times he was still praying to his God whom he thought was there because he helps him out. It seemed like those days, [he] fully believed that the salvation of the world depended on every one of [his] deeds, on every on of my prayers. But now, I [he] no longer pleaded for anything. (68) In Night Wiesel shows that he would always turn to God in the beginning hoping he would be there, but
Comment [GB8]: Fix punctuation Comment [GB9]: You really do an excellent job placing and using quotes Comment [GB7]: Punctuation goes after citation Comment [GB3]: The best part about your general sentences is that I can tell they are leading somewhere. You arent just rambling Formatted: Highlight Comment [GB4]: Your claim begins to answer the question. You have stated how faith functions, but you also need to state and then prove in your body paragraphs why faith is significant Formatted: Highlight Comment [GB5]: Your topic sentence is almost too general. It needs to outline exactly what you will prove in this paragraph. Comment [GB6]: Great job integrating this quote Comment [GB1]: Love your title

Comment [GB2]: Good first sentence

after God not being there for him or others he didnt know where he was. Elie would always ask what are you, my godwhat does your granderur mean, master of the Universe? (66) Since the holocaust Holocaust Elie didnt know what faith was anymore. He didnt know who to turn to and it seemed like God had left him. Wiesel shows this as him losing faith in his God over time. Sometimes you have to put your faith not in God but in someone who will be there with you. Elie always had faith in God and not his father especially because his father rarely displayed his feeling, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others than with that of his own kin. (4). Wiesel shows that he and his father never had the best relationship especially since he wanted to drive the idea of studying Kabbalah from *his+ mind (4). In Night Wiesel portrays that he doesnt have good relationship with his dad because his dad didnt support or have faith in him. So since Elie didnt have faith in his father it didnt matter what he thought and he shows that. Overtime the relationship they have changes because they only have each other to keep the faith they need. Never before had we understood each other so clearly. (69) As the horrific events continue Elie shows that their father son connection gets stronger. It now comes to a point where they both connect so much where they need each other. Especially since *his+ fathers death, nothing mattered to [him] anymore. (113) Throughout night Night Elie puts his faith in his father. His father was the one to keep him going and fighting. Wiesel shows the stronger connection they grew by the end. When you lose think all hope and faith is gone you lose the people that matter the most. Elie said well take turns. Ill watch over you and youll watch over me. We wont let each other fall

asleep. Well look out for each other. (89) Wiesel shows that he and his father had a relationship that kept them together. The rabbis son seemed too had lost faith his father because Elie wondered if he had wanted to be rid of his father? (91) Elie demonstrates that because of the loss of faith the son had towards his fathers makes it more likely to lose hope and just give up. Faith in his father and God plays a big role in Elies journey through the holocaust. In Night, it is shown as a changing factor. Faith in God kept Elie going in the beginning, but when he seemed to leave the faith in his father shined. Without the faith in his God he would have never been able to get faith in his dad, so he could continue down the terrible journey. Faith can keep people going and help them not to lose faith. Shine: superb use of evidence, great body paragraphs (except for topic sentences)
