A lesson on multiplication and division concepts using the book, The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins
Mathematical goal: For students to have an understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division and write a mathematical sentence to match with real world situations. TEK 2.4A model, create, and describe multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of concrete objects are joined 2.4B model , create, and describe dividision situations in which a set of concrete objects is separated into equivalent sets. Materials: cookie patterns, book: The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins, cookie math worksheet
Procedure: Students will predict what the story is about and listen to see what ways it relates to mathematics. After reading students will share ways it relates to math. Students will then cut out cookies from a cookie pattern and as a class, go back through the book solving each problem as they manipulate with the cookies. The students will observe the teacher record this in the chart of 12 cookies on the cookie math worksheet . Students will then solve cookie math problems in each chart independently using the cookie patterns as needed.
Color these cookies to look like your favorite kind. Cut them out.
