NURS 450: Nursing Capstone By: Lisa Dust

Issue: Nursing Burnout in Critical Care Units


Research Question:
Are nurses who work in critical units at increased risk for nursing burnout compared with nurses who work at lower acuity patient units over 2-5 years?

Need for Research:


Increase job satisfaction Reduce job turnover Increase facility protocols for high stress job environments Job satisfaction and levels of burnout are also important because of the potential impact on quality of patient care and patient outcomes [3].

Importance to Nursing:

Study Approach:
Quantitative research design Done on nurses with 2-5 years of experience, currently working in the hospital setting. Survey would include questions such as On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate your job satisfaction? Survey would include space to allow for subjective data.

Reduce burnout to increase patient satisfaction of their care Nurses satisfaction with work environment Emotionally, physically, mentally Healthy nurses Improve quality of care Signs of burnout include an inability to leave work, absenteeism, irritability, fatigue, decreased sense of personal accomplishment, and lower levels of job satisfaction [1]. more teamwork of nursing staff is associated with higher levels of job satisfaction and prevents burnout [2].
