Greer Derby

http://about.me/gderby Career Objective

My objective is to find a teaching position where I can integrate my teaching philosophy with the mission statement of the school, and the goals of the division, so that I can share my knowledge, talents, and experience with students, staff, and parents, and continue to grow professionally. My philosophy is that learning is a collaborative, lifelong process that extends beyond the classroom into the global community. Education should be active, equitable, and inclusive.

Lakeview Elementary School, Lethbridge, AB, Lethbridge School Division No. 51 Grade 3, Michelle Stroud (Teacher Mentor) In this internship I focused on Science, Social Studies, Health, Language Arts, and Phys. Ed. My goal was to develop classroom management, and manage the learning of my students. I developed long range, unit, and lesson plans that integrated a variety of instructional methods. I was involved in report cards and parent/teacher conferences. I collaborated with parents and colleagues, became part of the school community, and formed relationships with my students, all of which helped me meet a diverse range of learning needs. This experience enabled me to develop my classroom presence and personal teaching style, and build confidence in my skills.

Professional Semester 2 (March - April 2013)

Enchant School, Enchant, AB, Horizon School Division No. 67 Grades 5 9, Krysta Christensen, Kim Krushelnicki, Linda Virostek (Teacher Associates) I began teaching at one third of a full time workload, working up to full time. I taught Social Studies, Language Arts, and Art to a wide range of grades. This practicum allowed me to adjust for a large rural population, who faced obstacles with language, literacy, and attendance. I planned, implemented, and modified full-length unit plans, through which I assessed students formatively and summatively. This allowed me to expand my knowledge of the Alberta curriculum.

Professional Semester 1 (November December 2012)

Isabelle Sellon School, Blairmore, AB, Livingstone Range School Division No. 68 Grade 4/5 split, Susan Koentges (Teacher Associate) I taught one third of a full time workload, focusing on Social Studies, Language Arts, Art, Science, and Math. I gained understanding of the planning process through collaboration with the grade 4/5 teaching team as they made long range plans. I developed cross-curricular lesson plans, and projects that integrated ICT outcomes and inquiry based learning. I investigated classroom techniques such as scaffolding, natural consequences, and music as motivation. I addressed different learning styles through direct instruction, group work, multimedia, foldables, choral reading, and individual activities. This first experience helped me expand my comfort zone.
