Technology Program Administrator Program Evaluation

Executive Summary The mission of the library is to provide resources for faculty, students and community stakeholders at Dalton State in support of the curriculum offerings of the college. In order to meet this mission the library is committed to utilizing current technologies and to providing support staff that are trained to support this goal. This is accomplished through providing a computer lab and a video room. Staff support is available to students both in person in the library and through email. Additionally, the library provides workshops aligned with courses related to research strategies, citing sources and technology. Workshops are also provided outside of courses and are available to both faculty and students. The library has adequate staff and sufficient technology resources to meet the needs of the stakeholders. In some cases, the resources are underutilized by the stakeholders. Strengthening the collaboration between faculty and library personnel would perhaps result in greater utilization of these resources. Organizational Chart

Methods In order to collect the data needed to evaluate Roberts Library, I utilized observation, informal interviews and review of reports. I observed the technology help desk, attended two workshops, and took a tour of the library. In addition, I met with the Technology Librarian David Brown as well as the Reference Librarian Melissa Whitesell on several occasions. Mr. Brown and Ms. Whitesell were able to provide reports regarding the Library Workshops, the questions/emails submitted from the Library help page and the number of students accessing the Library Guides. Center Context and Goals The mission of the Library is posted on Dalton States website:

The Derrell C. Roberts Library supports the mission of Dalton State College by instructing a diverse student body, faculty, and staff in methods of accessing and evaluating library and learning resources that enhance the associate, certificate, and targeted baccalaureate level program curricula of the College. The Library acquires, organizes, and makes accessible collections of print and non-print resources in support of the programs of the College. The Library promotes the use of these resources by employing a qualified staff competent to provide bibliographic instruction and to assist users in the areas of reference, information literacy, circulation, and media services. The goals related to this mission are:

The libraries stakeholders consist of faculty, staff and students of Dalton State as well as the surrounding community. The Library maintains hours of operation twelve months out of the

year. Technology is directly supported by three members of the Library staff: David Brown, Technology Librarian, Melissa Whitesell, Resource Librarian and a library associate who helps run the technology help desk. Mr. Brown and Ms. Whitesell conduct many of the workshops provided by the Library including workshops specifically related to technology use. The technology help desk is located in the Library computer lab and is monitored by Mr. Brown. Center Activities The Center provides two help desks during normal Library hours. These help desks are utilized by students who need help locating library resources. The technology help desk is in the computer lab and addresses students questions regarding computer use. In addition, the Library offers a Video/Presentation lab which can be reserved by Faculty and Students to aid in speech preparation. The primary activity the Library provides is the listing of workshops available to faculty and students. The majority of these workshops are offered as a part of a course. For example, English 1101 requires the students to attend a workshop on research methods and includes information on Galileo, EasyBib, and other online resources available to the student. Additional workshops are offered which include topics such as Video Editing, Plagiarism, APA formatting and even a workshop on Prezi. These workshops are primarily held in the Library and are generally presented by the Librarians. In addition to the workshops, the Librarians also schedule one-on-one sessions with students and faculty as needed. Another activity of the Library Technology staff is to monitor and answer email questions from students. The Library website offers a Help Me tab which allows students to email a Librarian for assistance. The Librarian returns the email addressing the students question during normal library office hours. A key resource offered by the Library is the libraries utilization of Library Guides. Library Guides are, in essence, web pages used to compile information and resources on topics of interest to the faculty and students. Library staff and faculty are given access to create these guides. An example of the library guides is listed below:

The figure below shows a typical months activity:

Evaluation After evaluating the attendance documents related to the workshops, the data clearly supports that the workshops which are attached to the classes are well-attended but the workshops which are freestanding and are not required are not well attended. In some cases these workshops are even cancelled. These workshops are well planned and are delivered in a very professional manner. The faculty and students fail to take advantage of these services. I believe this can be solved utilizing two methods: when at all possible the workshop should be attached to a course and attendance should be required. In order to accomplish this library staff should make more concentrated efforts to work with faculty in order to integrate the workshops into a course. The second method I would utilize would be to change the format for some of the workshops from face-to face to online. This could be accomplished utilizing the already in place library guides. However, the guides would need to utilize additional methods to make them more interactive such as podcasts, surveys and discussion boards. This could easily be accomplished utilizing current web 2.0 technology. Workshops by Month
