Assignment 3b
! Identify the scenario and discuss relevant information on both children in the Scenario Dana is a 12-month-old girl who likes her caregiver and school, because according to this assessment Dana was not crying when entering the classroom and she gave Dana a smile and a large hug. Dana seams to be right on target wither physical development she can sit on her own, crawl and she is pulling her self up. Dana shows some signs of jealousy because she bites Jorges leg. Jorge is a 12 month old boy who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy this has limited his interactions with his pears. Jorge also has motor limitations.

! Complete the attached developmental checklist based on your observations of thechildren in the scenario See attachment ! Summarize your data from the checklist Domain: Emotional and Social Development for Dana According to the data collected Dana greets caregiver with a smile and a hug, but no kiss. She expresses emotion when she cries for attention when her

classmate Jorge arrives in the room. I dont see that Dana respond to soothing words or holding as her caregiver Miss Dana sits and rocks back and fort Dana continues to cry. According to the written data it is hard to tell if Dana picked the book because it is her favorite or if it is easy for her to reach the book. It is not stated that Dana is sucking on her fingers to calm her self when upset, copes with stress by playing with familiar toys, offers a toy to another child who is upset, moves arms, legs or body to get something. I did mark all those statements with unable to rate as they where not mentioned in the write up. For Jorge: I assume that Jorge is responding to soothing words or holding, because it is not stated in the write up that Jorge is crying when he is sitting on Miss Danas lap. There for I mark it down as a mastered skill. I also write down that Jorge can express emotion true his crying. I was unable to rate: greets caregiver with a smile hug or kiss, shows likes and dislikes for particular objects, sucks on fingers to calm self when upset, copes with stress by playing with familiar toys, offers a toy to another child who is upset and moves arms, legs or body to get something, Since it is not mentioned in the write up. Domain: Cognitive Development for Dana

Dana responds to words and gestures as she is giving Miss Molly a kiss. She also uses familiar gestures when she waves goodbye to her mom. Dana bites Jorge to produce an affect. According to the written data there is no data stating that Dana is producing her own sounds or babbles, nor is it stated that she is looking for a missing toy. It is also not stated that she is looking out the window to wait for a familiar person to arrive. I was also unable to find any written data about Dana turning the pages in a book. According to my findings I did mark the a bow mentioned domains unable to rate. For Jorge: Jorge is responding to words and gestures because Im making the assumption that Jorge is not crying when Miss Molly is holding him in her lap. Jorge is producing an effect when he starts to cry when Dana is biting his leg. According to the written data Im am unable to rate the following: produces own sounds or babbles, looks for missing toy, looks out the window and waits for a familiar person to return, turns pages of a book, looks at pictures and uses familiar gestures such as waving goodbye.

Domain: Physical Development for Dana

Based on the data reveled from the checklist Dana has mastered the skill of crawling, sitting and pulling her self up with help of object. I do assume that she can do the pincher grasp since Dana is able to pull the book from the shelf. I am not able to tell if she can transfer a toy from one hand to another according to the written data. There for I am marking it unable to rate. For Jorge: According to the written data I was not able to rate Jorges physical domains. ! Define possible outcomes (normal and atypical development) specifying how they would inform your teaching and guide your intention to seek additional assessment According to this one time assessment, I think it is impossible to know the normal and atypical development skills on both Dana and Jorge. I believe strongly that more individualized assessments are needed in the future to make a more vice decision on the childrens development. I would like to see a narrative description to go with the checklist to better make a decision on the outcome of development.

! Identify strengths/weaknesses of using the profile tool According to: Bentzen, w. (2007). The elements of observing. Seeing young

children (p. 216). New York: Warren R.Bentzen.

The strengths of using the checklist is: Usable in many different situations and methods, it is efficient, can provide baseline information to reveal

developmental gains or behavioral changes, can identify, behaviors and skills that one might want to observe in more detail later on. Weaknesses are: It does not preserve raw data, so details are lost and only action fragments remain in the observation record. ! Identify other tools that might be used to support collection of data Video taping would be good to use you would be able to record in more detail, and also get more information from your observation. You have the ability to watch the observation over and over again to be able to observe the situation in more detail. ! Discuss adaptations to the assessment tool or other assessment tools you might useand explain your rationale for using those options I think it would be great to have more room for additional notes so there would be more room to make some quick remarks as you do your observation. It would also be good to add more skills to the checklist this way it would be more detailed.
