Memories

-beginning of every class we wrote in journals about a quote written on the board. The quotes were usually people of history or history related. We saved them in the notebooks she had us keep. We would get a participation grade. Sometimes she would comment on them. I kept the ones I felt were most important to me. -our notebooks. She taught us how to organize our notebooks for class each day. We would have our daily quote and response. Then we would have the days notes she had written on an overhead. We would copy them down and then she would lecture about them. -her lectures included, videos (documentaries), demonstrations, pictures of artifacts, and personal history (her husband and WWII) -my first project in her class was a herald shield. We were learning about England and the era of the knights, feudal systems, etc. We were to look into our own family history and make a shield that represented our family. I loved it! -another project was also a demonstration. We were learning about Japan. She had different groups look into different areas of Japanese culture. My group got the Japanese Tea Ceremony. We researched and practiced very hard for this and she videoed it. During my junior year I had students come up to me saying they recognized me from that video. -she shared personal history that made the history we learned current. Her husband had a special roll in WWII. He was part of a team sent in to assassinate one of Hitlers leaders in Germany. The assassination didnt go as planned, and when Hitler found out he killed all the families in Germany that were related to the perpetrators. We felt very important that she would share this story with us in order to relate to us that Hitler and WWII were hideous times in the worlds history. She even shared letters students had written to her sharing their own stories. It made it so real to us. -she was compassionate. A student died after school one day. He was hit by a car riding his bike home. He was best friends with a boy in my class. We could tell he was hurt to the core. But his parents thought it best for him to go to school. Mrs. Sustar asked if he was alright and if

he needed to talk privately with her or someone else at school. He negated. And so she let him just sit in the back and do nothing. He was so sad and she didnt make him feel anything but cared for. I really appreciated that as a fellow student. -I only had Mrs. Sustar for half a year since my military family moved. She got me situated in class pretty quickly and had me feeling comfortable with the routine in no time. I was thankful for that. Its really hard and she made it simple for me. -she was so important to the student body our senior class asked her to speak at our graduation. She was retired and living in NY (we were in VA) but she came anyway.

-class management. She made sure all students were on the same page. -kindness-class management

-students reacted with caring and kindness back. Important to our lives.

-for class management. I dont remember there being any problems with kids in the class. I remember as I write this that the class rules were written and posted over the board. We knew what she expected and I dont remember there being any time when she didnt get it. I am not sure if she did at the beginning of the year since I wasnt there, but she had everyone well in-hand by the time I got there mid-way through the year. -she didnt use a lot of technology since it was fairly new at the time. Computers were still mostly to play simple games and typing up papers (word processing). The internet was just becoming important in day-to-day lives. -many things we learned were at times connected to our English class. We often read books on the topics we were learning in history.
