Genetic Artifact

The item in the photograph that I have selected for the Genetic Artifact is a photo of the baby that we created for the baby lab. On this assignment, we have to find a partner to play the mother or father. The purpose of this baby lab is to see what is dominant or recessive of the trait that was given to us. By figuring out what is dominant or recessive, is using a coin that determines which of the alleles that comes up. Heads can be dominant and tails can be recessive so whichever it lands on will shown more than the other, for example it can be a head shape or the chin. After we recorded the data, we have to create the baby from the traits that we got. This is where our artistic side comes in handy when we created the baby on a piece of paper. Our baby was a girl, and we named her Kyla. In the drawing our baby has a round head, noticeable chin, round attached ears. Then we have greenish-brown eyes with long eyelashes and her eyebrows were fine. Her lips were an average size, same goes with the nose and eyes. The unique trait that Kyla has are freckles and dimples. Her hair colour is light brown and same goes with her eyebrows. We try our best to draw it accurately to the data that we got from flipping the coin. This activity was from our reproductive technology lesson in the unit of genetic. We learned artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilization, and cloning. This is significant to me because I find this activity interesting and it also taught me about how a baby gets their traits or genes from their parents. We all wish that we had the choice to choose our childs traits such as their gender, eye, and hair colour, etc. I learn that whatever you inherit from your parents and your spouse, the outcome of your baby will shown from both parents. I learn what is a phenotype, genotype, and allele is. I also learn if you cross certain traits with another trait, it will give you the possible traits that the offsprings outcome. For example, where they cross a white ram with a black ram, it will show the possible traits by using a Punnett square. What I like about this lesson is that you

can apply this knowledge to real life. Maybe in the future, you may want to have a baby. It is great to have that knowledge of knowing what your child may look like or the traits that may might receive from you and your partner. I will be able to determine it by using the monohydrid or dihybrid cross. This will help me understand the unit better because you can apply this to other things than babies. I will also be able to know how animals and plants are cross. It helps me understand how genetics play a huge part in our lives. This is why I chose the baby lab as my artefact.
