End of the Year Report

Patterson Kennedy May 2009 1. Our goal was to prepare our students with skills that await them as citizens of the 21 st century. Patterson Kennedy en isions using technology to promote higher le el thinking and colla!oration skills among the students. Our students showed evidence of increase in higher level thinking skills and collaboration skills by their combined work on classroom projects and use of such tools as blogs, wikis, and social media sites. This improvement was focused the most on grades 7 !, and we need to see more " mprovement in the earlier grade levels. 2. "e want our teachers and other staff to !e a!le to use technology as a tool to increase communication across the disciplines. This year, our teachers joined together on #ing, which was a private social media website. The teachers used this website to share ideas, pictures, and thoughts throughout the week. $t this time, however, only %&' of our staff are utili(ing this tool. )e would like to see higher levels of collaboration in the coming school year. #. "e want to pro ide teacher training that allows teachers to use technology in ways that increase student engagement in the classroom. )e were able to provide training sessions this year on *oogle +ocs, +onorschoose, #ing, *aggle.net in addition to our tools for teachers e,po that shared a variety of tools. )e want to continue providing high -uality training for the teachers in the coming school year. $. Our goal is that e ery classroom ha e the necessary tools to pro ide a technology%rich en ironment for our students. )e currently have only . classrooms with built in /0+ projectors. )e have 1 systems in the library that can be shared throughout the building. 2ecause our building is scheduled to be decommissioned, the district does not want to put any money into purchasing new technology for us. 3any of the teachers have received grants for technology that they can use in their classrooms right now. )e definitely do not have what we need, but we are using what we have in the best ways we can. &. "e want our students to use technology to take more ownership o er their education' and !ecome independent and higher le el thinkers. The students showed evidence of taking more ownership over their education by showing increased interest in after school technology programs that were offered this year. )e would like to continue these programs into the ne,t year. (. Our goal is to introduce students to a glo!al community !y using technology as a gateway to creating relationships around the world. Our students in the !th grade created world diversity videos that showcased a particular culture that was in our school. #e,t year, we hope to e,tend this project to the 7th grade also. )e would also like to bring in 4kype projects from other countries in the coming school year.

Our goal is to produce digital citizens that respect the rights of others on a daily !asis. )e taught grades 5 ! about cyber eti-uette, cyber bullying and being good digital citi(ens. )e would like to e,tend this to grades . and & in the coming year. Results of *taff +eeds ,ssessment )e received surveys back from %5 staff members in the school. The following are the results of that survey6 -ypes of technology training teachers would like to see ne.t year/ $ majority of teachers wanted to learn more about training on technology that the students could use in the classroom, such as interactive websites or learning games. $bout 17' of teachers wanted more training on computer basics. $ small number of teachers wanted more training on *oogle tools. 0iggest -echnology 1oncerns /ack of technology resources was the number one issue that teachers brought up on the survey. They were also concerned that the computers were old and slow, and often did not work correctly. They would also like to able to bypass filters, and access 8outube videos for the students to watch. "hat was good this year2 Overwhelmingly teachers liked the technology e,po the most during the year. They found this gave them many new ideas that they could use in the classroom on a daily basis.
