SURREAL PAINTING NOTES & ASSIGNMENT SHEET

Assignment: Students will create an original oil painting in a surrealist style.

Directions:
1. Look through magazines and select 5 or 6 images that pop-out to you. One of these
images should be a landscape image that will serve as your main background.
2. Cut out your images and begin to arrange them onto your landscape background.
3. Layout a Surreal composition using random juxtaposition (contrasting images) yet
retaining one area of your composition as your main focal point.
4. Once you are happy with your Surreal composition, glue your collage together using a
glue stick.
5. Now on newsprint paper, draw your Surreal landscape using
pencil. This will serve as your sketch for your oil painting.
6. Using carbon transfer paper, trace over your newsprint sketch in
pen to transfer your drawing onto canvas paper.

7. Using oil paints, begin blocking in your background landscape area first. This layer
should have minimal detail.
8. After you have your landscape background finished, then begin painting the objects in
your middle ground. This layer should have medium detail.
9. Finally, paint the objects in the foreground; these should have the most detail.
