Ibeganmyresearchfirstbyunderstandingwhatadiscoursecommunitywas.Istruggledtograspthe meaningbutIkeptreadingSwaleswritingsandtriedtocomprehendthisnewtopic.AfterawhileI begantorealizethatthisnewtopicwasntsonewafterall.Thesocialgroupsaroundmeformed throughoutmylifewerethesecommunities.ButSwaleshelpedmeunderstandthatadiscourse communitywasmorethansocialgroupsbutacommunityofmembersrecruitedbyqualificationor commonculture.Thesesixqualitiesmustbemetinordertocallagroupofpeopleadiscourse.Thefirst ideaexpressesthatinordertobeinagrouponemusthavecommonideasorgoalsofthegroup.How elsecouldyoubecomefriendswithpeoplethatyouhavenothingincommonwith?Thenext characteristicmeansthemembersofthegrouptalkamongsteachother.Thethirdideahereisthat peoplewhoarewithinthecommunitymighthavetohelpgiveoutinformationtootherpeople.The fourthideapointsouthowthediscoursecommunityoperatesondevelopingdiscoursalideasforthe bettermentoftheircommunity.Thefifthcharacteristicincludesspeechesandhowtheymovetheir messageacrosstopeople.Thelastcharacteristicstatesthatthemembersofthegroupneedtoknow whattheyaresayingandareasonableratiobetweennovicesandexpertsshouldexistforthediscourse communitytowork.Withthesecharacteristicsandtheknowledgeofwhatadiscoursecommunitywas, Iwaspreparedtofurthermyresearchonthebrocommunity. HavingunderstoodwhatadiscoursecommunitywasIbegansearchingformyprimarysource. Thesescholarlywritingsorsourcesweretohelpmefindapublishedpiecepertainingtomydiscourse community.WithinmysearchIcameuponthenovel,Guyland,whichwaswrittenbyMichaelS. Kimmel.KimmelwentontoinvestigateAmericanmalesbetweentheagesofsixteenandtwentysix becausehewantedtoseethestagesoftheawkwardjourneywhereboystransitionintomanhood.
