UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: The unit objective of this assignment is to become familiar with the five senses. This project in particular with be about the sense of smell, and also the impact that sight has on smell. LESSON OBJECTIVE: The students will be able to associate smells with certain items and objects they see everyday. The goal of this lesson is for students to be able to correctly identify the object they are smelling without being able to see or touch the object in the jar. STANDARDS ADDRESSED: This lesson will incorporate problem solving, critical thinking, and decision-making. The student must identify the smell and write their thoughts and discuss their findings. MATERIALS: The materials in this lesson with include five jars with coverings over them. Within each of the jars will contain a different item: sliced orange, pine, cinnamon, vinegar, and coffee beans. BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: The key concepts for this lesson will be learning the five senses and focusing on sense of smell. I expect to build on this lesson by continuing working with my students with their five senses and how to identify them and determine the differences between them. I will later plan lessons on touch, sight, hearing, and taste PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: To begin this lesson I will explain the five senses and present a PowerPoint. I will give the students examples of each of the five and then focus on the sense of smell, asking them to tell me their favorite smells. Procedures: Step 1: There will be five stations set up, each with jars that are completely covered with smell holes in the top. Step 2: The students will spend 1-2 minutes at each station and record what they think is in the jar Step 3: The jars will be uncovered so that the students can see what is in the jars. Step 4: The students will visit each station again and smell each while they can see what is inside. Step 5: Class discussion on what they thought was in the jar before they could see it.

Closure: To conclude this lesson I will have the students discuss, as a class, what they have learned. They will talk about their original ideas on what they thought was in the jars and then about how they were either right or wrong.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: By the end of the lesson the student will realize how important sight is to the other senses. MODIFICATIONS: The students that were not able to master this skill would have still learned about smell ad sight and their relationship. The students that do not understand the lesson might need to repeat it and need more background information and examples.
