Rationale: It is important for students to be able to prepare writing a short story or lesson. For this writers workshop, students will learn about a web chart to brainstorm. This will help students prepare their fictional story. Objectives: Students will learn about a web chart used for brainstorming based off the mini-lesson. Students will use the chart to create the characters, the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story. Students will understand how to take their ideas and put together the parts to create their own story.

Materials: Worksheet Writing Notebook Pencil Teacher- Easel with larger lined paper Procedures: Mini-Lesson: o This mini-lesson will take place throughout the class period. Brainstorming will be done the first day and the next day the story will be written First, the teacher will begin the lesson at the carpet with the easel. The mini-lesson should take about 10 minutes.

Class, today we are going to learn about brainstorming. Does anyone know what this is? Allow students to answer if they know. o Brainstorming is coming up with ideas to help support your writing. We are going to use brainstorming to create a fictional story. Use this easel to show what the web format looks like and explain what you put in each circle. Setting in one circle, characters in another, beginning, middle, and end in each of their own circles. o Class, this visually helps us see what the story will look like. This helps us when we write the story, we already have the parts of the story planned out; we will just have to put them together. Does anyone have any questions? Allow time for questions. Lesson: o Class, today we will be brainstorming. Tomorrow, we will write our story. For brainstorming today, I am going to hand each of you a worksheet that has a web on it. Start creating ideas for your story. Remember, you need characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end of the story. Look back at the easel for an example. Does anyone have any questions? Allow for questions. Then direct students to go back to seats and begin the worksheet. Walk around the classroom to observe and assist students in their brainstorming. Help the students if they do not understand the different parts of the story, but give students the chance to be creative with their writing and have them come up with their own parts of their story. Collect brainstorming The next day in class, redistribute the worksheets to each student. o Class, everyone did a great job yesterday brainstorming and I looked over each worksheet and you all came up with some great ideas! Today, we will begin to write the story. Write the beginning, middle, and end of the story using a paragraph for each part. Make sure to include setting and characters. The beginning of the story should be a paragraph; the middle should be a paragraph, as well as the end should be a paragraph. Does everyone understand the directions? Allow time for questions.
o

Take out your writing notebooks and begin to write your stories. I will walk around the classroom to answer any questions. You have all class to write the stories. Walk around the classroom to observe and assist students with writing stories. Again, just assist with structure of story, not creativity. This should be a fun, but informational lesson for each student. If students do not finish in class, allow them to bring home for homework. Collects all writing books by the next morning.

Assessment: Assessment will take place by collecting the brainstorming worksheet the first night and the writing notebook. I will assess students by them understanding and creating their own parts of the story and if they creating each part correctly. I will assess student stories by making sure the sequence of the story is correct and all the different parts are used. Differentiation: To add a level of difficulty to this lesson, you could make students make a story about a certain topic. For more advanced students, you can have them research a topic and have them write a story about that topic. Technology Links: No technology was used in this lesson. Future Connections: This lesson will help students with preparation of a writing piece. It will help them plan their ideas and be able to implement them. Brainstorming is helpful for writing stories and papers for students.
