Human Health and Physiology: Digestive System Lesson II - Villus IB Biology HL 11

Objectives Review digestive system Organs (structure and function) Key digestive enzymes Understand the structure of villus in relation to its role in absorption and transport within the digestive system

Understandings 4.1 Explain generally how the digestive system (mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum) converts macromolecules from food into smaller molecules that can be used by cells for energy and for repair and growth. 6.1.4 Draw and label a diagram of the digestive system 6.1.6 Distinguish between absorption and assimilation 6.1.7 Explain how the structure of the villus is related to its role in absorption and transport of the products of digestion

Assessment Digestive system worksheet Think-Pair-Share participation Digestive system project Instructional Approach Activity Hook: Magic School Bus video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8GLxtLdzHs Do Now: Digestive system worksheet Label digestive system structures Match structures with functions Review Do Now review: go over digestive system organs and functions Review key enzymes involved and specified pH on board

Powerpoint lecture Mysterious structure reveal - observation/function table Absorption and assimilation Being Digested point-of-view assignment overview Taking the point-of-view of any food item, students write a story about the foods journey through the human digestive system, making use of their understanding of the structures and functions of the organs associated with the system.

Skills to be emphasized Drawing and labeling parts of the digestive system Understanding the structure and function of organs associated with the digestive system Understanding the structure of villus in relation to its role in absorption and transport within the digestive system Materials needed Laptop/projector for Youtube video Digestive system Do Now/ Think-Pair-Share worksheet Powerpoint Sponge activity Drawing digestive system Virtual dissection of cat Comparison between cat and human digestive system Investigating cow digestive system In-class time for Unit Project

Differentiation I have scaffolded the Do Now and Think-Pair-Share worksheet to better address the needs of my students. For the Do Now activity, the descriptions of the different organs functions are reworded and simplified such that they can be better understood by lower-achieving students (The two versions can both be found in EF_Lesson_01_DoNow_NormalDifferentiated). For instance, enzymatic digestion and absorption of organic substrates, vitamins, and ions is changed to organ in which most of digestion and absorption takes place, while mechanical processing, moistening, mixing with salivary secretions is simplified to chewing breaks food down into smaller particles to be more easily attacked by saliva. Also, while higher-achieving students have no problem with keeping focus and taking notes, I will create and provide a sheet of the slides with words blanked out such that it will be easier for selected students during the Powerpoint lecture.
