Learning Plan 1

Grade 6 Title: Cityscape Printmaking Pacing: ~12 days

Concept: Identity Concept Questions: How do people express their identities? Established Goals: (Virginia Beach Art Objectives) 6.5 Students will understand the value of interpreting artwork. (SOL 6.14) 6.10 Students will use critical thinking and problem-solving to communicate and express ideas. 6.13 Students will build a knowledge base for art production. (SOL 6.2) ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS/ LEARNING PLAN QUESTIONS How can ones experiences reflect the way they approach art?

ASSESSMENT Pre-assessment: (What students understand prior to lesson) The teacher will talk about cityscapes and assess the students knowledge of cities, What cities do you know? The teacher will talk about the important buildings in cities. Ongoing assessment: (What students are learning informal or formal) Students are learning about identity through James Gulliver Hancock. Students will print cityscapes using foam printing boards onto construction paper. Summative assessment: (What students will learn) Students will learn the role Identity plays in influencing artwork.

Artists can be inspired by personal experiences. Everyday objects can provide motivation for art making. Artworks can be interpreted in multiple ways.
Students will DO

Students will draw a cityscape with various buildings. Create a cityscape of at least 4 buildings that fit together or overlap. Print cityscapes using foam printing boards and black or white tempura paint.

KEY CRITERIA: Final drawing grade on cityscape and vocabulary Final print on construction paper Literacy- Artist statement about their city

SEQUENCE OF TEACHING & LEARNING 1) The teacher will talk about cityscapes and assess the students knowledge of cities. What
cities do you know? Teacher will talk about important buildings in a city.

2) The teacher will use the promethean board to show a video of James Gulliver Hancock and
his artworks titled All the buildings of New York a) The teacher will discuss James Gulliver Hancocks style, composition, colors, and subject matter. The teacher will also discuss Minecraft, a popular video game where the player constructs buildings out of blocks. b) The teacher will discuss whats in your cityscape? Students will discuss as a class while teacher writes on the board. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of drawing a cityscape with various buildings, create buildings that fit together or overlap, and printing cityscapes neatly using foam boards. The sketchbook journal checks and final prints will be used as a test on the students knowledge of concepts and vocabulary. Students will experiment in their sketchbooks various building designs and heights. Students must have at least four buildings in their cityscape and two sketchbook ideas. a) If writing is used on a building, it must be done so backwards because the foam board will print it backwards. Students will pick a sketchbook idea to use as their final. Students will use a pencil to draw in the lines of their cityscape on the foam printing board. The students can choose any color construction paper as their background, but only black or white paint to print with. Students will write an artist statement about the buildings in their city and what makes them important.
