Females that have been exposed to dating violence
while in their teen years are more susceptible to
depressive symptoms, disordered eating, smoking
and frequent sexual behavior in late adolescence
(Bonomi, Anderson, Nemeth, Rivara, & Buettner, 2013, p 8).
In males being exposed to dating violence increases
their risk of disorder eating, post-traumatic stress
symptoms, anxiety and depression, suicidal ideation
and attempts, smoking, alcohol and drug use, and
diminished emotional well-being (Bonomi, et al, 2013, p
9).

House Bill 882 is intended to amend part 14
of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the
Official Code of Georgia which is the current
"Quality Basic Education Act mandated by
the State Board of Education.
The amendment is to include the "Love is Not
Abuse" curriculum to the rape prevention and
personal safety education programs for
prevention of teen dating violence.

Representative Beasley-Teague

Spoke about teen violence and bullying and
necessity of prevention program in school
Curriculum Love is not abuse was already
written and paid for
Stated that she would bring bill back again
next year if it did not pass this year.

The Opposition- Senator Tom Rice

*Claimed there was not enough factual data to support that teen
dating violence was a problem in Georgia.
*Claimed a violent act was hard to define and prove
*Claimed that children should be taught right from wrong and to
respect each other at home
*Pointed out that there is only so much time in a school day,
therefore there would be no time for implementation of the
curriculum.
*Pointed out that a school should be the one to decide what it
teaches.
*Claimed there was no funding to implement the program
Ms. Williams (Tri-Cities High school Principle Secretary)

Youth can benefit from preventive education but by the
time youth get too high school it's too late
Youth need education on all relationships not just
boyfriend girlfriend (Anti Bully)
Training should start as early as elementary

Ms Veil Brookview (Elementary Principal
Secretary)

Abuse is usually attributed to what is learned
in the home
Media has a lot of influence on children's
behavior
preventive lessons are necessary
