Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to (1 points):
1. Students will define self-esteem and the elements of self-esteem during the Introduction
to Self-Esteem and Unit activity.
2. Students will analyze the factors that influence their self-esteem during the Self-Esteem
Inventory activity.
NHES and Iowa Core:
NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease
prevention.

Content Introduction
Desired Student Outcomes (1 point): To help individuals gain a greater understanding of self-
esteem, and the impact it has on their lives.
Anticipated Time: 15 min
Activity Description (1 point):
Explain what will be going on in this unit self esteem, understanding others self-esteem,
effects of stress on the body, and stress management Ask students what they know about self-
esteem. Add to students definition/descriptions and include the elements of self-esteem:
recognize and accept one's strengths, achieve a sense of belonging, develop a sense of power,
and have imitate positive role models.
Materials Needed: Goals and Resources Handout
Extension Options:
Hand out Goals & Resources handout and tell students that they can write down any goals they
think of throughout the unit. .

Content Development Activities:
Desired Student Outcomes (1 point): Students will understand self-esteem and demonstrate the
skills necessary to improve self-esteem.
Anticipated Time: 10 minutes
Activities Description (1 point): Self-esteem Inventory
Each student will get a Self-Esteem Inventory handout to assess their self-esteem. Students will
have about 5 minutes to fill out the questionnaire. After the questionnaires are complete the
students will be split up into groups of 4 giving them a chance to discuss the results and how the
four elements of self-esteem have affected them personally.
Materials Needed: Self-esteem Inventory Questionnaire
Extension Options: After 5 minutes the class will come back together and talk as a class to find
any commonalities and possible ways to build self-esteem in certain areas.

Closure: Questions and Answer
Question #1: What are the elements of self-esteem?
Desired Student Response: Recognize and accept one's strengths, achieve a sense of belonging,
develop a sense of power, and have imitate positive role models.
Question #2: What was the importance of The Self-esteem Inventory?
Desired Student Response: To see where each student stands in regards to their self-esteem.
Question #3: What is self-esteem?
Desired Student Response: A feeling of pride in yourself

Assignment Due: Next Class
Assessment: After looking over the students logs, I will be able to gage the students
understanding of self-esteem.
