Content Introduction Desired Student Outcomes: TSW understand the importance of self-esteem and will be able to relate self-esteem and their average stress per day. Anticipated Time: 15 minutes Activity Description: I will start the class off with a riddle to spark their curiouslity on the topic of self-esteem. The riddle will be, You cant touch it, but it affects how you feel. You cant see it, but its there when you look at yourself in the mirror. You cant hear it, but its there every time you talk about yourself. What is this important but mysterious thing? I will tell them to try their best to figure it out. Once theyve figured it out, I want them to take a few minutes to reflect on how this quote relates to themselves, and relate that to the stress they feel every day. Materials Needed: The riddle, a chalkboard, paper and pencil Extension Options: After everyone has written something for their reflection, we will bring together as a class and discuss what everyone thought of the riddle. Content Development Activities: Desired Student Outcomes: TSW observe the self-esteem of a fictional character from a show or movie, and list positive and negative qualities using the handouts. Anticipated Time: 45 minutes Activities Description: The students will be dividing into groups of three. Each group will choose a fictional character from a show or movie and using the handouts will list 5 positive qualities and describe how each quality relates to their self-esteem. They will do the same for the 5 negative qualities. Materials Needed: Pencil and handouts Extension Options: Once everyone is done completing the handouts, we will come back together and discuss our findings as a class.
Closure: Questions and Answer Discussion (30 minutes): Question #1: What is self-esteem? Desired Student Response: Self-esteem gives you the courage to try new things and the power to believe in yourself. Question #2: How is self-esteem related to everyday stress? Desired Student Response: If you have a higher self-esteem you will more than likely have low stress levels. Question #3: Whats the difference between self-esteem and bragging? Desired Student Response: Self-esteem is having pride in yourself, while bragging is showing everyone the pride you have in yourself.
