1. Smartboard S.S Students will have a mini lesson about continents and oceans at the carpet.
2. Globe MakingStudents will craft their own global representation of the world.
3. Letter WritingStudents will write a letter to a pen pal in another country
Brief Lesson Descriptions (2-3 sentences each) Lesson 1 the students will engage in a mini lesson at the rug to reintroduce the concept of continents and oceans. The students will sit and observe a flat picture of the world and a globe. We will talk about how both representations of the world are correct. After we look at already put together maps, the students will be asked to drag and drop the continents and oceans on a blank map in their correct spots. This learning will be assisted with teacher and peer help. After that we will go over some interesting facts about each continent and write them on the board.
Lesson 2 will include an art component. The students will be creating their own globe with the 7 continents and 5 oceans labeled on it. They will be painting paper plates blue to represent ocean water. The continents will be cut out from another worksheet and glued on to the Styrofoam using correct placement and the oceans will be labeled and glued on as well.
Lesson 3 the students will be writing a letter to a pen pal in another country. Art Integration Unit Plan Template 3
The students will be given a handout (attached) to fill out. The students are expected to write a short message to another student in 2 nd grade who is currently living in another country. They are to include 1 fact that they learned about the particular continent that student is living on. Also, they are expected to include 1 question for their pen pal and 1 fact about their own continent. What student prior knowledge will this unit require/draw upon? Students should have prior knowledge of what maps are. Students should know how to read a map. Students should already be able to use and identify primary colors. Students will know how to apply paint with a dragging, not pushing motion. Students will have prior knowledge of how to research to build and present knowledge in their writing pieces.
What activities will you use to engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this unit? Students will engage in imagining through the creation of their own world map. They will be able to image what the world looks like to scale from their own art creations. Students will explore what it means to live on a different continent through their letter writing to a pen pal across the world. Lastly, students will engage in experimenting during this units mini lesson. Students will experiment with the location of all the continents and oceans as they try to conclude the correct placements.
How will this unit permit/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways? This unit aids student learning in problem solving through divergent ways because it provides them with multiple approaches to understanding and comprehending that our world looks like. This unit helps the children step out of their personal world and see that not everyone lives the same way they do because some people live on the complete opposite side of the globe. This unit would also help students see the different cultures that others kids are raised in. Addressing some of the differences in clothing, food, living, etc. would help the students visual and even see some of the problems that others encounter around the world. How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning/learning processes? Students will be engaged to reflect on their learning of our world through their writing pieces in addition to an end of the unit class discussion. I want the students to reflect on what it means to them to live on the continent, North America. I will be able to assess their learning by viewing their writing in the letter-writing format provided, and see what they have included in the body as important information.
How will this unit engage students in assessing their own work and the work of peers? This unit assesses student work during their art lesson. Students will be able to observe their peers work and provide guidance to any who are struggling with the map concept. They will also be able to assess their own work by comparing their maps to the map we pieced together during our mini lesson.
What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work? After the student compose their letters to a pen pal, those letters will be read over and provided with constructive feedback for improvement. Prior to the Art Integration Unit Plan Template 4
final drafting of the letter, the students will have time to revise and edit their letters.
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning/understanding/work in this unit? Once all the students have completed their globes we will have time to display everyones artwork and compliment everyones hard work. Additionally, there can be an added time for parents to come in and chat with the students about their letter writing. They can share why they chose to write to the continent they did and talk about what they have learned about North America.
How will you adapt the various aspects of this lesson to differently-abled students? These lessons can be adapted for gifted learners by having an extension worksheet where they need to not only label all 7 continents and 5 oceans, but also label the equator, add a map key with a compass, and circle where in North America we live. For struggling learners another worksheet can be adapted that already has all the continents and oceans labeled, but they need to color them based on a specific color key. Then that color key would match up to an already created color key on the paper plate.
