Purpose and Need Purpose and Need
Create an appropriate gateway to the Capitol and Washingtons
Monumental Core
Provide a balanced, sustainable, multimodal transportation network
Knit neighborhoods together
Provide better access to waterfront areas and parks to the east and
west of the river
Support the development of new mixed uses and employment in the
corridor that enhance the vitality of existing neighborhoods
Improve mobility (transit, bicycle/pedestrian connectivity to network)
Improve safety (motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians)
Minimize stormwater runoff increases
The development and enhancement of the South Capitol Street corridor
is an important early step in fulfilling the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative
vision and providing a catalyst for the reinvestment and reclamation
process.
