Garden Description
This garden features strawberry plants. Strawberries are a
fruit with their seeds visible on the outside of the fruit. They
ripen in early summer through fall depending on the variety.
Planting different varieties of strawberries are recommended
for extended harvest. Plan on adding plants to your design like
caraway, radishes, and nasturtiums to help keep insect pests
away.
PH Test
Strawberries grow
best in a soil of 5.5-
7.0 pH.
Watering
Strawberries
initially need daily
watering after
planting. They
should be watered
twice a week after
established.
Sunlight
Plant strawberries
in full sunlight.
There should be at
least 6 hours of
sunlight each day.

SPRING 2013
Plant radishes around the edge of your
strawberry garden so that pest insects
will eat the radish leaves instead of your
strawberries. Pick berries daily when
they are bright red. Remove berries that
are overripe to avoid decay and molding.
Mulch between plants with straw to
preserve water loss and
cont

rol weeds.

Did you know?...
Keep strawberry plants away from cabbage plants; cabbage plants can
slow growth rate of strawberry plants. Planting beans in your strawberry
garden helps add nitrogen strawberries need in the soil.
History
The word strawberry comes from the Old English
word strawbridge. Perhaps this name was given
because strawberry plants put of runner shoots and
establish new plants. The runners resemble bridges
between plants. Strawberries were recorded in
England in the mid 1700s.
Harvest Planning and Preservation

Harvest strawberries when they are bright red. Most
varieties of strawberries will bear fruit for about three
weeks. Strawberries keep in the refrigerator for about
3-5 days only. Wash berries just before eating. Berries
store well in the freezer. To freeze: wash berries in a
colander, pat dry with paper towel, arrange on a
baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours in freezer. Take off
sheet and store in an air tight container or air tight
freezer bag. Frozen berries store well in a freezer for
2-3 months.
