12/16/2009 Conversations with Children - I:
Conversations with Children - I:
This lesson is about the alternate ways of asking questions and answering while talking to young
children.

We all know that we inorder to ask What is your name? in Hindi, we have to ask
4 ? (aapka naam kya hai). The use of (aapka) is too formal. Hence while we talk to
children especially our own kids or children whom we know, it would be alright to ask the
question in a less formal way. You can ask the name of a child like this:
1. + 4 ?(tumhara naam kya hai) - What is your name?
2. , + 4 ?(beta, tumhara naam kya hai) Son, What is your name?
3. |, + 4 ? (beti, tumhara naam kya hai ) Daughter,What is your name?
4. , + 4 ?(bete, tumhara naam kya hai) bete can be used to address
both girl and boy.
5. + (tumhara naam batao) Tell me your name.

For both the genders, F (tumhara) is used. But if you are addressing a group of children,
then you can frame the question as: | (tum logon ke naam batao) which
means Tell me your names.
If a child is asking the same question to another child of his/her age, then they can ask
4 (tera naam kya hai). But this is not considered a polite way of asking, hence it is not
advisable to use (tu) for you.
t means My name is Rashmi. While answering the question about name,
both girls and boys use (mera). Here are some more answers :
My name is Jyothi. - 7 |(mera naam jyothi hai)
My name is Anand. - |(mera naam anand hai)
I am Kavitha, her name is Jyothi, and he is Mukund. -

, | 7 ,

| (main kavitha hoon, uski naam jyothi hai, aur vah mukund hai)
I am Anand and he is Rajesh. -

|(main anand hoon aur vah rajesh

hai)

12/17/2009 Conversations with Children-II
Conversations with Children - II:
This lesson is the second of our series on learning the alternate ways of asking questions and
answering while talking to young children.

If you want to ask : How old are you?, then you have to ask | ? (Tum
kitane saal ki ho) to a girl and ? (Tum kitane saal ke ho) to a boy. You can
also ask F| ?(Tumhari aayu kitani hai) or F| R 4 ?(Tumhari umr
kya hai). If you are addressing this question to a group of children, then you can frame it as
| R (tum logon ke umr batao) or as (Tum log
kitane saal ke ho).
Children might reply as:
I am 11 years old. - |

(Main gyarah saal ki hoon)

I am 5 years old. -

(Main paach saal ka hoon)

I am 8 years old. - |

(Main aath saal ki hoon)

I am 11 years, he is five and she is eight years old. - |

,
| (Main gyarah saal ki hoon, yah paanch saal ka hai aur vah aath saal ki
hai)

Now, if you want to ask: Do you go to school?, then you have to ask: T

?(Tum
school jaate ho) to a boy and T
