warships bombarding Fort McHenry
- Unaware of progress of battle
- American flag lifted over fort: began writing words to the poem
- Originally called The Defense of Fort McHenry, the poem was
put to the tune of a popular song at the time,
To Anacreon in Heaven, and adopted the name
The Star-Spangled Banner.
- Ask students to listen carefully to the lyric as teacher sings.
- Break down text, writing it on the board and asking class for help on
specific words
- Explain any challenging words or ideas (perilous, ramparts, gallantly)
- Sing through song once (or twice) with class, then have them sing it on their own.
