AREA:
Hundred Languages
LESSON TITLE/TOPIC:
Destruction of Culture World War

DURATION:
90 minutes

LEARNING INTENTIONS:

Create an emotion/feeling about the war in Leuven in 1914.
Allow the children to relate to the destruction of culture through videos and images - library.
Enable the class to express their feelings about the WW1 through a tribute piece.

TIME ACTIVITY RESOURCES

INTRODUCTION:

For the introduction of this lesson, we will begin with an
impression.
We will tell the class about our first experiences of Leuven as
Erasmus students. We will present photographs to the class of
our experiences of Leuven i.e. What Leuven looks like today.
We will then tell them about our experiences of finding a
photograph when moving into a new flat in Leuven and
introducing the boy from ww1.

Our own
photographs
which we have
taken of Leuven.
Photographs of
home city.

TIME ACTIVITY RESOURCES

DEVELOPMENT:

Overall, for the main part of this lesson, we will begin to talk
about Leuven in 1914 compared with today.

Firstly, discussion will occur about the pupils likes/dislikes that
they have from living in Leuven and whether or not they think
Leuven has always been like this.

We will use map of the city of Leuven today and let the class
show us where their favourite places are. In order to
introduce the destruction of culture theme, we will present to
the class a map of Leuven in 1914. Projected map onto the
interactive whiteboard. This map will show a combination of
modern day Leuven and Leuven 100 years ago showing the
places which were burnt by the army troops. In doing this we
will want the children imagine they were living 100 years ago
and how they would feel if their city was a war zone.
Discussion will occur around the WW1 and how they feel.
Facts will be included.

Following a brief discussion, we will then present a video to
the class of a boy born 100 years ago in 1899. The boy will be
of the same age and it will also be his birthday on the same
day that Leuven was burned. This will be the same boy whose
letter was left in our house. It will show how his likes/dislikes
are similar but his birthday turns out very different. At the end
of the movie there could be an image of a candle transitioning
into the fire of Leuven. The focus will be the burning of the
library in the WW1 and how the theme of destruction of
culture becomes evident. We will incorporate art works
(tapestry which Leuven gave to America for helping rebuild
the library).

We will draw the pupils attention to how destruction of
culture occurred in our own countries as well. Through the
use of photographs and artwork and our own tributes we will
explain about our background and culture.

Show examples of peoples stories from WW1 on the
interactive whiteboard including their background and asking
them who they most relate to and why. E.g. the mayor, poor,
rich.

What does the word tribute mean to them. How would they
make a tribute. What does it look like. E.g. show examples of
tributes statue infront of the train station.

We want to ensure that a symbol of hope is a strong theme
in our lesson. To do so we will ask the class to make a tribute
of something to a boy/girl in 1914. We will give the pupils free
choice of what way they make their tribute. Through
providing them with stimulus (examples of tributes), they will
be inspired to create a tribute. They could make a song, poem,
piece of art or write a letter. Add music while they work.

The examples of tributes could be from our own countries.

CONCLUSION:

Finally we will reflect on the tributes which the children have
made. We will ask some of the children to present these to the
class.
The children will then be given a task to hang their tribute in
Leuven the next time they do fun activities with their friends as
a symbol of hope for Leuven. Ask the children to take a picture
and bring it in to class to make a collage. Ask the children to
take a picture of the collage and send it to us.
