Types of computers

Operating System
Def: the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as
scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.
1. Windows XP : Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft
for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops,
laptops and media centers
2. Windows 7: Windows 7 is an operating system produced by Microsoft for
use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops,
netbooks, tablet PCs, and media center
3. Windows 8: Windows 8 is a personal computer operating system developed
by Microsoft as part of Windows NT family of operating systems.
4. OS X: OS X, previously Mac OS X, is a series of Unix-based graphical
interface operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Apple Inc. It
is designed to run exclusively on Mac computers
5. OS X Mountain Lion: OS X Mountain Lion is the ninth major release of OS X,
Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.
6. OS X Mavericks: OS X Mavericks is the tenth major release of OS X, Apple
Inc.'s desktop and server operating system for Mac computers
7. Windows Server 2012: Windows Server 2012, codenamed "Windows Server
8", is the sixth release of Windows Server. It is the server version of
Windows 8 and succeeds Windows Server 2008 R2. Two pre-release
versions, a developer preview and a beta version

Computer Parts

Motherboard: a printed circuit board containing the principal components of a
computer or other device, with connectors into which other circuit boards can be
slotted.
CPU: the hardware within a computer that carries out the instructions of a computer
program by performing the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of
the system.
RAM (Random Access Memory): allows stored data to be accessed directly in any
random order.
Hard Drive: a high-capacity, self-contained storage device containing a read-write
mechanism, plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit.
Solid-State Drive: a data storage device using integrated circuit assemblies as memory to
store data persistently.
Magnetic Drive: Magnetic-core memory was the predominant form of random-access
computer memory for 20 years (circa 195575). The cores can be magnetized in two
different ways (clockwise or counterclockwise) and the bit stored in a core is zero or one
depending on that core's magnetization direction.
Expansion Slot: a place in a computer where an expansion card can be inserted.
Network Card: a computer hardware component that connects a computer to a
computer network.
Audio Card: A sound card is an internal computer expansion card that facilitates the
input and output of audio signals to and from a computer under control of computer
programs.
Video Card: a printed circuit board controlling output to a display screen.

Hardware

Firewire: a technology that allows high-speed communication and data exchange
between a computer and a peripheral or between two computers
Thunderbolt: a hardware interface that allows for the connection of external peripherals
to a computer.
Drivers: a device or part of a circuit that provides power for output.
Dongle: a device that is connected to a computer to allow access to wireless broadband
or use of protected software.
Peripheral: a device that is connected to a host computer, but not part of it. It expands
the host's capabilities but does not form part of the core computer architecture. It is
often, but not always, partially or completely dependent on the host.
USB 2.0: Also referred to as Hi-Speed USB, USB 2.0 is an external bus that supports data
rates up to 480Mbps.

Computer Troubleshooting

Start button is gone:
Step 1: Check if the Start button and taskbar are minimized
Step 2: Check if the Start button and taskbar are set to Auto
Hide
Step 3: Restart Windows Explorer
Step 4: Restart the PC in Safe Mode
Step 5: Further troubleshooting from Microsoft
Monitor went black: check if the monitor is plugged in.
Mouse wont work: check if the mouse is plugged into the
computer.
Computer keeps restarting:
