Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.

Have you ever heard of the Feminist movement? Wow! Have you ever been through
that? Well the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf illustrates the interest in time and
psychology. The author also tries to illustrate how the women who had to be in the work field
during the wars fought for equal rights and powers that the men would have gotten. During this
period the novel shoes that there was rapid political and social change that occurs in the book.
Mrs. Dalloway was the main character who suffered with the mental disorder through the change
of the body politic in her time. Clarrisa shows how she wanted nothing more, but to gain both
commercial and critical success. In this time people didnt even stress a higher education for the
women. For Mrs. Dalloway who has mental disorders to cope with it was more of a challenge
for her to fight for equal rights like the men. The women were so easily manipulated by the
males because they had no powers. This was the period of time that the author call a moment of
being. This moment in which is the time of which the characters goes through an occasionally
life pattern. Culture in this book shows their strength in the power of human. The novel Mrs.
Dalloway allows the readers to see women emerge with sense of wholeness and power despite
the body politic of their time.
The meaning of body politics basically shows how people have control of their body with
some regulations if the government and laws that have been set for the women to gain power
from their weak and powerless status they had to go through this particular event call the
Feminist movement. For example women can speak freely and have come out the closet with no
fear of a man. According to Body Politics- FEMINISM AND, RACIAL, It is the practice
through which powers of society regulates the human body.(Source-1, Page-1). In Mrs.
Dalloway body politic was in the process of slowly changing. The main idea was The form the
body politic was based off of a womans power and control over her own body.(Source-1, Page-
1). They based this form of politics on the women so that they can gain and keep their power and
even have control over their own body. We the people can live as freely as they want as long as
the rules are complied with. This allows gives restrictions and limits on certain activitiessuch as
freedom of speech or even be a participate in politics, a power that is played on human body
includes the government and law. (Source-1, Page-1). Although the people have their own
powers, the government and laws still applies to ones human rights. During this time men were
more in to politics, but Lady Bruton had the reputation of being more interested in politics than
people (Primary Source, Page.105 Virginia Woolf). Although the book illustrates that at that
time men had more interest in politics as well as control and power over certain things; Lady
Bruton shows how there is no specific person or gender that can be as interested as she was in
body politics. Women never had a voice when it came down to power, but now that they have
been exposed to it, they dont how to take control of it. Which is why, Movement works the
same way because those who are weak deny their own powers. (S1, Page-1). In the past
women have been denied their problems because they allow themselves to be weak; which
means they wont be able to maintain their own powers.
Women have gained powers and right from the second wave movement. It was a great
exposure on the mens behavior in the past and shows that women now have a voice too. In the
Body Politics- FEMINISM AND RACIAL, The 1970s was considered to be the Second
Wave. The second wave was the feminist movement in the U.S. (Source-1, Page-2). The
second wave was a gateway that was opened up for women to be heard. This movement has
taken place overtime to show the changes in politics. The second wave feminist body politic
affected the socially sanction on male power. (Source-1, Page-2). This gave exposure to the
males power and even pride because everything they have done wrong was keep as a secret.
That was a sign in how they have so much power to keep control of the women to keep quiet.
Once the women began to speck up, things that the second wave promoted were; removal of all
silence about rape, sexual abuse, and violence to women and girls.(Source-1, Page-2).
Everything that the women were to keep a secret became exposed to such as list. The second
wave really affected how powerful the males were. People then began to look at it from another
point of view. This is showing a connection the people in the public A slogan that was being
used in the public to show equal rights was The personal is the politic.(Source-1, Page-2). The
slogan is self explained that, the personal is the politic means that powers are now held amongst
one itself. At the time of the novel women didnt have much knowledge because advancement in
education wasnt made a priority for the women. So you can only imagine, how she got through
life on the few twigs of knowledge (Page-8 Virginia Woolf). Mrs. Dalloway was able to get
through life with the little knowledge she held on her back. Even though she was affected by
men abusing their power towards women, Clarrisa still stood strong.
Clarrisa Dalloway was able to maintain to help herself cope with all of her social issues
that come across her. As a woman it was always good to maintaining yourself shows that self
appearance is the key to a confident woman. The novel states that, But those Indian women did
presumably silly, pretty flimsy nincompoops. (Primary Source, Page-7 Virginia Woolf). Indian
women seemed to have kept up with their appearance so well that people notice. It shows that a
woman can hold their heads up high and show power over weakness. How people are so
judgmental has not changed from then and now, but the aspect of what people are judge upon
might have been slightly different. Personality can play a huge role in daily lives, and how
she dressed, how she treated people who came to lunch she did not care bit... (Primary Source,
Page-11 Virginia Woolf). Personal appearance will get you the treatment from others that they
believe you deserve, even though thats not always the right approach. Thats why still not till
this day there are different attire that should be worn to different occasions. Virginia also
describe Clarrisas living situation, How she lived in a slum without a cushion or a bed or a rug
or whatever it might be all her soul rested with that grievance stinking in it (Primary Source,
Page-12 Virginia Woolf). Clarissa was able to achieve all she has set fort for herself, for
example the writings that she continues to write as well has dealing with the mental disorder and
all the other struggles ahead of her. She never let anything gets in her way of living life. Just like
some other characters in the novel Clarissa was a positive, a particular hush or solemnity
(Primary Source, Page 4 Virginia Woolf). Throughout all the battles and fights Mrs. Dalloway
remains a positive person. She puts up with all the battles within themselves and passes through
it all. The main character is compared to men in which Clarissa.interested in politics like a
man. (Primary Sources, Page-10 Woolf). Clarrisa keep a strong stance in what she believes in,
although women didnt have power in politics, politics was still in her list of interest.
Bipolar disorder is a condition where the person can be depressed at one point and happy
the next. It affects about 5.7 million American adults today. This disorder has been common for
some many years now. Some research shows that According to the National Institute of Mental
Health, (NIH) Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. (Source-
5, Page-1 "The Body Politic Online Radio by the Body Politic."). People can be affected by this
disorder at any age, When Michelle was 19, and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
(Source-5, Page-1 "The Body Politic Online Radio ) Michelle and Mrs. Dalloway both was
affected by this disorder at a young age, but for Mrs. Dalloway it was after losing both of her
parents by the cause of death. Bipolar can be just one of the many other disorders that people can
have. All around the world Many people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given
time. (Source-5, Page-1 "The Body Politic Online Radio by The Body Politic."). Sometimes
there is no cure. And the doctors would recommend that you were to get plenty of rest and
consume healthy nutrition. Woolf experienced her first bout mental illness after her mothers
death; she suffered from mania and severe depression for the rest of her life. (Source-2, Page 1
Woolf). For the fact that all disorders cant be cured, Mrs. Dalloway had to learn how to cope
with her bipolarity.(Source-2, Page 1 Woolf). Once she was affected by the mental illness, she
then had to learn herself again, just to cope with everyday life as a normal person. Clarrisa was
also able to vent her problems through her writing because no matter what she was still writing.
Discrimination and judgment of people affects womens rights, mainly in the African
American community. It is not discrimination within a persons race, but its about ones
personal appearance. Women who have never had power to their name are taking a huge step to
gaining power can be hard from someone that has always known that she had no powers. Hold
all powers in your own hand. No women shall let a man take that from her. (Source-4, page -1
SHANKER.). Women in the 1900s have suffered with no powers at all. Some women live
their lives to serve to a man. Its time that women have their share of both power and freedom.
Judgment can be so hurtful to ones feelings. Racist still exists. And it is not only through types
of peoples ethic background. (Soure-4, page -1 SHANKER.). The African American
believes that they are still target with their looks. Because people have been so judgmental and
still discriminates therefore its still a form of racist. That doesnt mean racism between races
doesnt occur. Recently Black women have spoken and written eloquently about hair and
identity. (Source-4, page -1 SHANKER.). It has been so common that black women have
started to speck on the subject more and some even wrote about it. The African American
women have been the voice us women as a whole. As time has changed people have changed.
Now,in our generation people does whatever it takes to fit in example are tattoos, piercings, or
even a change of gender. (Source-1, Page 1 ). Now that we have more freedom and people are
exposed to many different activities that the community participates in, its easy to fit right in if
that was your choice. The change of gender has been the main difference in the change of time
verses in which the 1970s you never really hears too much about it. But for the reason of it now
being so common, it cant even be used against you for any reason. For example, getting a job,
purchasing different types of insurance or even becoming a legal parent or guardian, without
having you true gender known or used against you. As you can see that it has become easy for
people to act freely upon their beliefs, but yet has gay marriage been legal in all states. Thats
still a form of discrimination. It shouldnt matter who you marry because legal or not legal the
actions of being with someone wont necessarily change.
Genes have been studies for years and shows that there has yet been a specific gene that
may affect peoples opinion of politic groups. Doctors though that they could provide evidence
that certain gene can help answers the questions to why families may choice the same political
group. Family ties weaken when people decides to leave home. (Source-3, Page-1 The
Economist Newspaper). People tend to be easily influenced by all of their family members and
even just the immediate household. Because you are exposed to your families opinions and are
gullibly to the voice of those that you care for. There have been so many studies from different
doctors and colleges. Dr. Fowler and his colleagues implied a gene known as DRD4 in the
development of political affiliation. (Source-3, Page-1 The Economist Newspaper). Doctors
have studied genes they believe that might be connected to the political affiliation. Doctors have
also done independent studies of the gene. In some cases, Dr. Hatemis own work shows that
external shocks like unemployment and divorces effectively abolish the genetic influences.
(Source-3, Page-1 The Economist Newspaper). Sometime people are affected by natural cause
of life. Just because you arent prepared for certain shocks that may occur, you still live up to
them. For example, your parents get a divorce and you have to choose a side, you are going to
choose the side that you feel is right. And the bond with the one you disagree with will start to
fade. In certain cases Some of which politicians knowledge that is included in twins are
attitudes to racial, sexual, and religious questions. (Source-3, Page-1 The Economist
Newspaper). The studies in the twins show that political reviews can be based on many
different categories such as religious or even race. Because the gene of twins are more
commonly alike within a family, the studies of the genes amongst twins have been able to
answer some questions. But science just always happens to be different. Once a person has their
freedom of thoughts their opinion can be based off of anything. Even throughout all the different
studies, Yet there is no specific gene for liberalism or conservatism. (Source- 3, Page-1 The
Economist Newspaper). Doctors still havent come up with a specific gene that a person may
have to categorize them in to a specific political party that they would be affiliated with. Some
studies even showed that as age progresses the percentage of you being affiliated with the same
political party as a family member lessen.
Overall this essay concludes that women have become stronger overtime since the 1970s.
But that have had to cope with the mental issues and changes in the body politic that may have
applied to them. Mrs. Dalloway coped very well with all the changes in the community and
society as well as within her own life. She just wanted to be heard. In the time of the twentieth
century we have well advance and will continue too. Although there have been some major
changes with how genders are judge differently, there still has not made both genders one
hundred percent equal. Males are still the highest paying gender, no matter if a woman have the
same degree and even more experience at that. Also women have become independent. Then,
back then in the 1970s women were known to be property to their men. Clarrisa illustrates that in
the novel because she was very picky with her husband and she didnt allow him to affect her life
to make it even worse than what it was. One day the in the future the women must become
stronger than the men. The novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf allows the readers to see a
women overall is stronger that a men. Women have been able to put up with all the negatives
that they have been discriminated on. Women are affected by men daily and in the past, now the
exposure on the mens crudity allows women to have a voice.
