During the Austro-Prussian War Volume I
1866
The Austro-Prussian War of 1866 was one of the shortest and most important wars of history. Although it
lasted for approximately six weeks it shaped the destiny of Europe for many years to come. It established once and for
all, Prussia as a dominant power in Europe and the world and ultimately led to the unification of Germany and finally
ended with the First World War almost fifty years later. In the short term it benefitted the power and security of
Prussia.
It began in 1864 when Austria, then one of the largest and most powerful countries on the continent and
Prussia formed an alliance against Denmark. Denmark had laid claim to Schleswig and Holstein. Austria nad Prussia
denied this claim and saw it as a threat. The combined armies of Prussia and Austria marched on Denmark and the
Danish King, Christian IX renounced his claim. Austria then claimed Holstein as a protectorate and Prussia
Schleswig. Behind the scenes the crafty Prussia Chancelor, Count Otto von Bismark began to persue his plan to unify
Germany under Prussian domination. With Austria stretched far from its own borders to protect Holstein, Bismark
began what can only be described as deliberate provocation of Austria. His goal was to unify the Reform German Con-
federation with a new German Parliament and to write a new constitution that would exclude Austria from any influ-
ence. Austria refused to acknowledge this process and Bismark's hands were tied. To force the issue and provoke a
conflict that he was sure of winning, Bismark announced that Prussia had as much right to Holstein as Austria. Prus-
sian troops were sent to Holstein. He then sent dispatches to Saxony and Hannover stating that Prussian troops be
allowed free passage through their borders to attack Austria. Refusal or hesitation on their part would mean war with
them as well. This message was sent on June 15, 1866. On June 23, three Prussian Armies under General von Moltke
began to march on Austria.
Numerically the Austrians and their allies were far superior to the Prussians and their allies by almost three
to one. King William I of Prussia, along with Chancelor Bismark accompanied the army as it marched into Bohemia.
At Kniggrattz (Sadowa as it was called in Britain and France) the two armies met. Fighting lasted most of the day
and losses were heavy on both sides. The Austrians dominated for most of the day until at approximately 3:00PM an
army of fresh Prussian troops, 80,000 strong under Crown Prince Frederich fell upon an unprotected Austrian flank.
The Austrians were forced to retreat in disarray toward Vienna. Austria's hold on the German Confederation was
destroyed and the war was over.
