Bravo Pattern
The three phases of an instrument rating are:

Aviate Aircraft Control, Basic Attitude Instrument Instruction
Navigate Perform departure procedures, enroute navigation, & approach procedures.
Communicate Learn clearances & ATC communication.

The "bravo pattern" is a great training tool for teaching aircraft control during the initial phase of
instrument training. It encompasses all the previous lessons into a single diagnostic maneuver.

1. Brief Student Thoroughly Prior to the Flight
2. Performance of Maneuver in the Aircraft
a. Do not demonstrate for
student unless absolutely
necessary.
b. All available instruments
are used.
c. Roll out on headings
regardless of time.
d. When changing airspeed
in turns, simultaneously
change bank and power,
also pitch if applicable.
e. The descending final turn
is made at an absolute rate.
f. The final descent is made
to a minimum altitude set by
the instructor, or until the
time expires, whichever
comes first. This may be
combined with an IFR to
VFR transition if the pattern
is set up so that it ends on
short final for a runway with
appropriate landing
conditions.
g. The emergency pull-up is
made as a normal go-around
procedure, climbing to the
original altitude.
