Initial Ed Tech Definition

Before beginning this course of study, the phrase Educational Technology meant
bringing technology into the classroom. It meant using resources such as Smart Boards
and the internet to supplement my instruction.
In the education of children with hearing loss, your instruction needs to be as visual as
possible. I thought, and still think, that technology is a great way to give my students a
more visual and hands-on learning experience. Then, I started to learn a little more
about online courses. I recently met a teacher that works for PA Cyber, and she told
me that she has students with hearing loss. I started thinking that with the growth in
online education, this might be something to pursue further.
My original thoughts on the meaning of Educational Technology are very similar to the
media definition from 1970. The definition states that technology can be used
alongside the teacher, textbook, and blackboard (p.2). It also states that the pieces
that make up instructional technology include: televisions, films, overhead projectors,
computers, and other forms of hardware and software (p.2). The only difference is
that Im using more up to date technology. But, I hadnt really thought about the
process, or system, involved. According to the more updated definitions, Educational
technology includes how you use that technology. As a teacher, you need to develop
methods of using it.

Revised Ed Tech Definition

My original definition focused on not only technology, but on methods of implementing
it. While this still holds true, Im inclined to add to my definition by saying that designing
instruction to fit your students needs is just as, if not more, important.
I think the most important lesson was the lesson on research ethics. Although, I thought
the majority of it should be common sense, there is a reason that the code of ethics is in
place. I am coming to the realization that not everyone is honest. There are a lot of
people out there that are only looking to benefit themselves, and they dont care who
gets hurt in the process. This course, and the discussion board, helped me to see other
ways to look at things.
I wrote my paper on differentiating instruction for the student with a hearing loss. I
defined differentiated instruction, talked about the hearing impaired student and the
challenges he/she faces, and how to differentiate instruction to reach that student.
