based on the theme A narrow
escape.
No. of Lessons: 9
Total Time: 3 weeks
2 doubles
1 single
Group: 5
th
year
No. of Pupils: 17
Aims:
-Introduce students to the concept of storytelling through illustration, layout and tone.
- Students will produce a completed A2 sheet with 6 frames.
-Enable students to recall a narrow escape and identify the most interesting aspects of the story for
each frame.
- Develop students understanding of proportion and view point.

Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme:
Students will be able to

-Identify and describe the work of three artists that use imaginative composition to tell action
stories; Alfred Hitchcock, John Romita and Curt Swan.
- Students will compare work created in class to the work of artists when discussing work in class.
- To indicate the tone of the story by using a realistic style of drawing.
- To learn how to structure the layout of the story with the use of templates. To decipher the frames
that needs to be the most prominent.
- To gain an understanding of the role of story boards in the film industry.

Investigating/Exploring/Creating: Students will be

Investigating
Investigating the work of artists Alfred Hitchcock, Curt Swan and John Romita.
The composition of a story and how it maps out on page.
Identifying interesting aspects of a story/memory and drawing them from imagination.

Exploring
Experimenting with mixed media; pencil, pen, chalks, oil pastels, watercolour.
Developing techniques with media to create a sense of depth or distance.
Translating a story onto a story board with the use of different viewpoints.

Creating
At the end of the scheme students will have created a story board consisting of six frames.
The story board will contain at least one close up, one birds eye view and one side profile.

Understanding/Evaluating:
Students will be instructed to pick a memory of an incident that they experienced or saw on a movie.
The memory could be from a soccer/ hockey match, something unusual that happened while they
were walking down the road. Something extraordinary with some element of action in it.
It could also be a snippet from a movie they have seen, students could tailor the story by including
new aspects such as a different ending. The theme of the project is quite broad; there is great scoop
for students to use their imagination to come up with a unique result.
Story telling is the most important aspect of these project students will learn how to structure
frames so that the story is told effectively. Students will also learn about different styles of story
boards and how they convey different messages. Such as a cartoon style illustration, informs the
viewer that the story is humorous and fun. Whereas a realistic style drawings often portray a more
serious narrative. I feel the best time of the year to carry out this project is at the beginning of the
year as students have an abundance of fresh memories from their busy summers just gone. It also
gives students the opportunity to be active learners from the very beginning of the year as they are
making the decisions what their story board will be based on. This project will also be extremely
beneficial for students to develop drawing skills in proportion, scale, tonal range and view point.

ICT:
Overhead projector will be used to introduce the subject matter and nature of the project to
the class.
Visuals/ video.
Students will use class P.Cs to gather research and images to work from.

Key words/phrases: Narrow escape, action, view point, panorama, close-ups, longshot, birds-eye
view and side profile.

Teaching/Learning Strategies:
The scheme will be introduced by asking students questions about movies. This activity is
designed to encourage students to engage with subject matter and share knowledge
amongst the class.
A presentation of images will be shown to students to demonstrate how artists such as
Alfred Hitchcock used story boards to narrate a scene.
Class evaluation will take place at the beginning and end of classes for students to respond
to work.
Peer to peer assessing will take place during class reviews giving students the opportunity to
speak about their own and peers work.
Materials: Pencil, ruler, eraser, paper, sharpener pencil, pens, water colour paints.

Safety Precaution:
Bags will be kept under desks
Position myself in the classroom close to students who need assistance/ support.

Differentiation:
Students with weak drawings skills:
Encourage to focus on one drawing in each frame
Enable students to focus on detail in close up shots
Include 2/3 tones in drawings of each colour.

Students with exceptional drawing skills:
Instruct students to use a variety of viewpoints / frames when illustrating story.
Encourage students to include a variety of tones

Timeline/Sequence of Lessons:

Week 1
Introduction to project, inform students what scheme entails. The tasks that need to be
completed and the time frame.
Introduce students to artists who are using similar subject matter or processes in their work.
Inform students of the different styles of drawing in setting the tone.
Develop students understanding of viewpoint and layout.
Establish a narrative to work on and begin preparatory page mapping key aspects in
thumbnails.

Week 2
Introduction to layout: demonstrating to the class the different frames that can be achieved
by using cut out shapes on a page.
Highlighting the importance of the size of each frame in telling the story.
Giving an important aspect of the story a larger frame, inform students how the frame could
be involved in telling the story also. (Elements extending outwards leading into the next
frame).
By the end of the week student will create material/ colour tests on a work sheets.

Week 3
Students will begin include colour into their story boards with the use of light water colour
washes/ colouring pencils.
Demonstrate to students the most effective process when using watercolor paints.
Work must be completed by the end of the week (Hold detailed class review at the end of
the week).
