As Paddy looks over the edge of the cliff he
shakes his head.
Paddy says, "dis budgie jumpin'' is too
dangerous for me..."
A few minutes later, Seamus approaches.
He too has been to the pet shop and is
carrying the familiar 'pepper bag.'
Seamus pulls a parrot out of the bag and
Paddy notices that in the other hand
Seamus is carrying a gun.
"Watch this Paddy" he says, as he
launches himself over the edge of the cliff.
Paddy watches as half way down Seamus
takes the gun and blows the parrot''s head
off. Seamus continues to plummet until he
joins Sean''s mashed remains at the
bottom of the cliff.
Paddy shakes his head and says, "An oim
never troyin'' that parrotshooting oider..."
After a few minutes, Danny strolls up. He
too has been to the pet shop and walks up
with his 'pepper bag.'
Danny pulls a chicken out of the bag. He
puts the chicken above his head, holds its
legs and launches himself off the cliff with
the same result.
Once more Paddy shakes his head.
"For me life Danny, first der was Sean wit
his budgie jumpin, den Seamus
parrotshooting and now you '' hengliding..."

CHICKEN CROSSFIRE
Why did the chicken cross the road?
Pat Buchanan answers this question: "To
steal a job from a decent , hard-working
American."
Dr. Seuss answers this question: "Did the
chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with
a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road,
but why? It's not been told."
Grandpa answers this question: "In my day,
we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the
road. Someone told us that the chicken had
crossed the road, and that was good
enough for us."
And Pakistani/Indian answers this question:
"dos'nt mateer why chicken cross the road,
just catch it and eat."

BIRD BRAINED
Two Irishmen walk into a pet shop. Right

says to Paddy; "Dat''s Dem". The
shopkeeper comes over and asks if he can
help.
"Yeah, we''ll take four of dem dere budgies in
dat cage op dere", says Mick, "Put dem in a
pepper bag"
The shopkeeper does as asked and the two
pay for the birds and leave. They get into
Mick''s van and drive until they reach a cliff
with a 500ft drop.
"Dis looks loike a grand place", says Mick.
He then takes the two birds out of the bag,
places them on his shoulders and jumps off
the cliff.
Paddy watches as his friend drops off the

Four Kenyan Nationals
Sentenced in
Marriage Fraud Conspiracy
HOUSTON Four Kenyan nationals residing
in Houston were sentenced tlast week for
marriage fraud, visa fraud and conspiracy to
commit marriage fraud, Herman Ogoti, 53,
Alfonso Ongaga, 36, Andrew Mokoro, 36, and
Rebmann Ongaga, 33, were convicted
following a seven-day trial on Nov. 14, 2013.
Ogoti and Alfonso Ongaga were also
convicted of unlawful procurement of
naturalization.
Alfonso Ongaga and Andrew Mokoro were
sentenced to 16 months in federal prison,
while Ogoti and Rebmann Ongaga each
received six-month terms. The judge also
revoked the naturalization of Ogoti and Alfonso
Ongaga, thereby stripping them of their
fraudulently acquired U.S. citizenship.
The scheme was uncovered on Nov. 10, 2009,
after two recruited women were detained at
the U.S. Passport Office in Houston,
suspected of committing passport fraud. They
had told officials that they were traveling to
Africa to see the animals, although they did
not know where. Upon further questioning,
they admitted they were both recruited to
travel to Africa to marry the recruiters family
members.

the classic ?studio model of a production office
set by his father giving opportunities to
directors and writers who are either new or
upcoming.
The difference between the son and the father
is that Aditya can be unilateral. I forgive but
never forget is his credo. So if an actress has
ever rejected an offer from his father (as in the
case of Dil To Pagal Hai) or from him
(Moh-abbatein), she is never approached
again. Similarly, Sunny Deol, who had
objected strongly to the part of Shah Rukh
Khan being made stronger than his in Darr,
hasnt ever been featured in a Yash Raj
project after that.
On a personal note, Aditya Chopra had always
advised me quite sagely, Your reviews have
to be what you ?believe in. Never make a
compromise; never praise anyone when you
dont mean it. Curiously though, after an
unflattering review of Mohabbatein, Chopra Jr
has never spoken to me. Practise what you
preach isnt the strong suit of Bollywood, which
is why I wasnt entirely surprised.
I know of his rocky marriage with his childhood
sweetheart, interior designer Payal Khanna,
only from the tabloids. It seems that Yash and
Pam Chopra were quite disturbed, and for
years Aditya Chopra almost replayed his script
out for Dilwale Dilhaniya Le Jayenge. He had
to get traditional family approval, which was
eventually granted a couple of years ago. Rani
Mukerji was clicked arriving from a holiday in
Switzerland with the Chopra family. And
Shatrughan Sinha, with his characteristic
candour, called the actress Rani Chopra at a
public event, leading to a flurry of denials from
the Yash Raj PR office. Will marriage bring
about a change in Aditya Chopra? Not likely.
Unless theres a miracle, he will remain
Bollywoods one and only Invisible Man.
Discovering Waheed Murads inspirations
By Saadia Qamar
Iconic actor Waheed Murad was paid tribute
to by students of Karachis Greenwich
University at an event that explored the
depth and philosophical thinking behind his
productions.
Khurrum Ali Shafiq led the interactive
multimedia presentation titled Inside the
Mind of Waheed Murad Mystery
Revealed.
Waheed Murad took the film industry by
storm and was dubbed the Chocolate Hero.
His acting skills and charisma made him one
of the most popular actors of the 1960s and
1970s. The star acted in 114 Urdu films,
eight Punjabi films and two Pashto films.
Khurrum Ali Shafiq explains that his interest
in Waheed Murad revealed a new side to the
icons perspective on filmmaking.
While explaining Murads life, Shafiq said,
Waheed Murads father was in the film
distribution business. Murad had a degree in
English Literature from Karachi University,
and from the from the facts I gathered he
found true inspiration in the work of Ulysses by
James Joyce. So much so that when he
directed Ishara, which was released in 1969,
he made sure it was based on the same
symbolism and unity of imagination that was
once given to the audience by Joyces "novel.
Waheed Murad was more than just a reader;
he was a guide through great literary work
trying to bring more than just a cinematic
experience to screen and audiences alike,
said Shafiq.
In terms of symbolism, Shafiq said, Like Iqbal
who symbolised his son Javed in Javednama.
Waheed Murad symbolised his daughter Aliya
in the movie Ishara, to an extent that the
female lead of the movie was even named
Aliya. The release of the film coincides with the
year (1969) his daughter Aliya was born.
Shafiq shared a few clips from the movie for
the audience to appreciate what an intriguing
director Waheed Murad actually was.
Salma Murad, the stars widow told The
Express Tribune, It is so hard to believe that it
has been so many years since his death and
still Waheed lives on in the heart and mind of
many of his fans. I have only seen his fan
following increase day by day. We thank God
for bestowing him with such popularity, even
when he isnt alive. I would like to thank
Khurrum Ali Shafiq for doing such extensive
research on him, for telling everyone what
exactly went on in Waheeds mind. Waheed
had a focus, a primary concern to change the
way people think for the better; to open up the
hearts and minds of our nation.

Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukerji have tied the
knot on the sly but will the union draw the
notoriously private director into the public eye?
Its literally a marriage of the prince and the
showgirl. Hes the 42-year-old scion of the late
movie mogul Yash Chopra and his 36-year-old
?dulhaniya is an actress who had to struggle
to attain an eminent status in the hierarchy of
Bollywood heroines. After almost a decade of
speculation will they, wont they? Aditya
Chopra and Rani Mukerji solemnised their
affaire de coeur with a marriage ceremony in
Italy.
That you already know. What you might not
know is that the two are ?absolute opposites:
hes coiled up and shes gregarious, which
prompted one of his closest friends to once tell
me, Adi is attracted to that quality in her. She
makes him loosen up never in public
though, because he refuses to go out to
events of any kind. About the only time he
steps out is to catch a new film at the multiplex
close to his home in Juhu. He likes to gauge
the audience reaction. After the show, of
course, he takes to his heels in case the
paparazzi is lurking around the corner.
Aditya Chopra, the chairman of ?Yash Raj
Films and arguably the No 1 film producer
today, hasnt thawed ?and it has worked for
him. Unlike all ?film personalities, he remains
inaccessible and mysterious, which has
earned him the sobriquets of Phantom and
?Invisible Man.
Ever since Ive known him just out his teens
and aspiring to write and dir-ect films hes
been shy, yes, but not if he warms up to you.
As a school kid, Aditya had the notion that
every father in the world made films, since his
childhood chums included Karan Johar,
?Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan all
from film families. Surprisingly, he was the
most accomplished dancer of the lot, winning
the kiddy contests at birthday parties.
As he went into his teens, of course, he
realised that all the world isnt a stage for
cinema. Exceptionally bright, he completed his
commerce graduation, began assisting his
father on film shoots beginning with Chandni,
and began writing a script in collaboration with
Honey Irani, a riff on the Robert Redford movie
Indecent Proposal. That didnt work out,
neither did the next collaboration with Honey
aunty on the screenplay of his debut-making
blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
There were differences: Aditya felt that he was
writing most of the scenes and dialo-gues
anyway.
The Aditya I knew (cant say I still do) is
excessively emotional and old-fashioned
actually. If a senior staffer in the Yash Raj
office is spoken to rudely by any of his actors,
he is offended instan-tly. And he has followed

Prominent Indian writers have challenged the
argument that Modi will be "constrained by
allies" or the country's institutions. Siddharth
Varadarajan for example has argued that Modi
is seeking to "convert the personality-based
election campaign into a pseudo-presidential
type of administration" and will face virtually no
constraints from an ideologically more
cohesive National Democratic Alliance
(comprising BJP and allies) to pursue the
social agenda of the RSS. Others too have
suggested that India's watchdog institutions
may wilt before Modi's confrontational stance,
exemplified by his party's criticism of the
Election Commission.
Another question is whether Modi's emphasis
on reviving India's struggling economy, his
'development' agenda, and support from
corporate India, will urge him toward more
pragmatic policies and focus on economic
issues rather than the Hindutva agenda or
sabre rattling against neighbors.
For now these questions are wrapped in
uncertainty. Precisely for that reason,
Islamabad would be well advised to adopt a
wait-and-see approach until the new
government settles in, defines its agenda and
sets out its foreign policy direction.
There are of course concerns in Pakistan that
a Modi-led government might adopt a harder
line on Kashmir. Persuading Delhi for talks that
recognise Kashmir's importance to the
normalisation process will likely be more
problematic under Modi than it was during
Congress rule.
Although Modi has generally been circumspect
in comments on Indo-Pakistan relations, his
response to army chief Raheel Sharif's
reference to Kashmir as Pakistan's "jugular
vein" is instructive in this regard. In an
interview with an Indian news agency, Modi
described this as "highly provocative" and said
he wished the outgoing government had taken
a "stronger stand on this uninvited
interference" in India's "internal affairs".
Predictably, the BJP manifesto has pledged to
scrap Article 370, which gives Indian-held
Kashmir constitutionally sanctioned 'special
status'. Over the years, Article 370 has been
amended to virtual death. But whether the
promise to constitutionally formalize a de facto
situation materializes or is put into abeyance in
deference to coalition partners (as happened
during the last BJP government) will have an
important bearing on its handling of Kashmir.
The fundamental issue that Islamabad will
have to address is how to deal with the new
government if, as present indications suggest,
Delhi refuses to revive the broad based
"composite" dialogue, cherry picks issues of
priority to India and excludes Kashmir, Siachen
and Sir Creek from the structured engagement
between the two countries.
Should Islamabad then just engage on
trade/economic issues that the BJP
government might be responsive to, and agree
to put contentious issues, all of which are
deadlocked, on the backburner? Can this
approach even work or be sustainable when
the strategic environment between the two
neighbors remains fraught, and unresolved
disputes cast a dark shadow over efforts to
develop a more normal relationship?
A new government in Delhi will undoubtedly
offer an opportunity for a reset of relations. But
to build a sustainable basis for normalization,
Islamabad should not be lured into accepting a
selective approach to engagement based only
on so-called 'soft issues' when it knows that
discord over 'hard issues' can easily erupt into
tensions and derail even modest movement in
economic ties.
This is dictated by common sense and
attested by recent and past experience.
This happened again last year when
tensions on the Line of Control in Kashmir
halted progress in liberalizing trade. This
was but the latest example of how
festering problems can easily derail the
normalization process.
Therefore, it will be a diplomatic error to
settle for a fragmented normalization
process instead of the long-accepted,
comprehensive, eight-issue framework for
dialogue, which reflects the priorities and
concerns of both sides, and not just one
country's agenda.
Once the new government has had time
to settle down, Pakistan should seek the
revival of a full-fledged peace process on
the grounds that limiting the bilateral
engagement to a single track will neither
build enduring economic relations nor
make longstanding disputes go away.
When the complexion of the new
government becomes evident, as well as
who will form its foreign policy and
national security team, Islamabad should
carry out a comprehensive review of the
possibilities and challenges before taking
any diplomatic initiative with Delhi.
It should convey to India's new leadership,
and to assorted international actors eager
for progress on Pakistan-India relations,
that partial dialogue will only lead to partial
and transient normalization. To be real,
normalization has to take place across the
board - even if some tracks in the
dialogue will move faster than others. A
'partial peace' will be just that, 'partial',
and prone to disruption and regression.

Dealing with Modi's India
By: Dr Maleeha Lodhi
As India awaits the outcome of its election,
Pakistan should calmly weigh the implications
of the result for relations between the two
countries and consider how - and when - to
engage the new government in Delhi. The
policy response needs to be carefully
calculated and calibrated and guided by a
sober appraisal, avoiding both a wishful,
over-eager reaction and an alarmist one.
It now appears that the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) is set to emerge as India's single largest
party. Its leader, Narendra Modi, a polarising
politician, was rightly described by The
Economist recently as "a man who has thrived
on division." A life-long member of the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), his
communal track record has evoked fear
among India's Muslims and the country's
liberal and secular sections.
The party he leads is quite different today from
that which governed India in 1998-2004, as
many Indian commentators have pointed out.
The BJP's past stint in power is, therefore, not
a reliable guide to the future.
A new and untested political entity in Delhi will
confront Islamabad with fresh diplomatic
challenges. How relations between the two
countries will evolve will depend, in large part,
on how Modi's avowed muscular nationalism
translates into policy. Some Indian analysts
are already predicting "a more muscular China
and Pakistan policy". But no one in the BJP
has spelt out what that might mean in practice.
How a Modi-led government will break from
the fundamentals of India's foreign policy is yet
to be determined.
For Pakistan, distinguishing between what the
BJP has said in the election and what it
actually does in government will help to
fashion a sound approach to deal with the new
dispensation. The BJP manifesto has had little
to say on foreign policy. Modi too has avoided
saying much, probably because he needs to
overcome his international status of pariah,
owed to his role in the 2002 slaughter of
Muslims in his home state of Gujarat. The BJP
has, however, repeatedly assailed the
Congress government for being too 'soft' on
national security.
Several questions raised by India's political
and electoral dynamics could have a bearing
on Delhi's handling of foreign policy. The first
relates to how strong and stable the next
government is. This will obviously depend on
whether the BJP secures an outright majority
or needs allies to form and run the
government. The first outcome will make
significant policy departures possible. The
latter will mean more continuity.
Second, to what extent will the responsibilities
of power and dynamics of coalition politics
restrain a Modi-led BJP from following its
Hindutva agenda? Will alliances with parties
that have more regionally focused agendas
'contain' or free Modi to pursue what his
supporters describe as a more "robust" foreign
policy? As few potential allies share Modi's
strident Hindu nationalism, will coalition
building help to moderate him?

Iran agrees to waive $200m a month penalties
ISLAMABAD - In a major development, Iran
has agreed to waive the penalty clause under
which Pakistan is bound to pay $200 million a
month for not meeting the gas pipeline
deadline of December 31, 2014.
Under the Gas Sales Purchase Agreement
(GSPA), there is a clause of take and pay
under which Pakistan will be exposed to $200
million penalty as per the volume of the gas if
it fails to develop infrastructure and lay out the
pipeline in its territory from the point of 250 MP
at the Pak-Iran border to Nawabshah.
Now Iran has decided to waive the penalties to
be invoked from December 31, 2014 by
agreeing to the change in the deadline of the
completion of the project on Pakistan's side,
but Tehran has linked the waiver with the
seriousness of the Government of Pakistan.
Pakistan has been asked to start constructing
the infrastructure for laying out the pipeline on
its side and then Iran will come forward to bail
Pakistan out in terms of sharing the funding.
Pakistan says it could not arrange the required
funding from the international financial
institutions because of the US and EU
sanctions on Iran for its nuclear ambitions. Iran
accepts this but says penalties will not be
imposed on Pakistan for not meeting the
deadline provided it shows seriousness
towards the project. During the PM's visit to
Iran, the two countries have agreed to
continue the project with a new impetus.
According to the official, there is no impact of
sanctions on constructing the infrastructure
and laying the 781 kilometers pipeline from the
Pak-Iran border to Nawashah; rather these are
imposed on the export of gas.
Since the US and EU countries seem inclined
to relax the economic sanctions on Iran and
owing to the visit of Pakistan's premier to Iran,
the top official at the Ministry of Petroleum and
Natural Resources said, there is now visible
activities that can be felt in the ministry to
initiate the process for building the
infrastructure.
This amount will be used to initiate the
construction of the infrastructure to show
seriousness. Iran has completed the 900-
kilometre-long pipeline under the IP project but
Pakistan has so far not initiated any work.
After the go-ahead signal for the IP project at
the highest level, the technical level talks will
be held for changing some clauses in the gas
sales purchase agreement and a new
timeframe will be worked out for the
completion of the project. Pakistan thinks it
can complete the project in 15-16 months
period once sanctions on Iran are lifted.

NEW YORK - Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani

TOKYO - The US-led military presence in
Afghanistan will remain significant despite
this year's drawdown, Washington's special

James Dobbins, the US special representative
