Policeofficershaveoneofthemostdangerousoccupationsthatthereis.Eachday
isanewquestforthem.Theirbasicdutiesincludeenforcinglaws,respondingto
emergencyandnonemergencycalls,andprotectingsocietyasawhole.Whilesomedays
maynotbeasdangerous,othersdayscanbedeadly.Unfortunately,OfficerRobert
BobbyC.DeckardJr.wasavictimofoneofthoseperilousdaysandwasshotinthe
headonDecember8,2013oftheSanAntonioPoliceDepartmentofSanAntonio,Texas.
OfficerDeckardJr.playedanactiveroleinthecommunity,hehadgrownupinSan
Antonio.Hewasanavidhunterandfishermanandexcelledinphysicalfitness.Hewason
theHighlandsHighSchoolfootballteam,showedpigsfortheFFAandwasawardedthe
ChampionShowmanshipBuckle.Eveninhighschool,hisdreamwastobecomeapolice
officer.Tobeginhislawenforcementcareer,heworkedatadetentioncenterin2004and
transferredtotheSanAntonioPoliceDepartmentin2006.
OfficerDeckardJr.wasa31yearoldwhohadleftbehindalovingwifeandtwo
children.HistourhadlastedsevenyearsontheSanAntoniopolicedepartment.Onthat
fatefuldayofDecember8,2006,OfficerDeckardJr.wasfillinginforanotherofficerwho
wasinjured,whenhehadseenthedistinctlypaintedvehiclethatmatchedadescriptiontoa
vehiclethatwascorrelatedwithaseriesofrobberies

Thesuspectshadcommitted15violentrobberiesprevioustothehorrificaccident
thatoccurredonDecember8,2013.ThesuspectsandOfficerDeckardJr.werepursuing
acarchaseintoAtascosaCountyinTexas.Asthechasetoreachtheculpritpursued,
OfficerDeckardJr.wasslainintheprocess.Thesuspects32yearoldShawnRuiz
Puenteand29yearoldGenevieveRamoshadopenedfireandshottheofficerthrough
thewindow,causingthepolicecruisertocrash.
Atrooperhaddeployedroadspikestoattempttoslowdownthedubious
individuals,unfortunatelythespikesdidnotinfluencethechase.AfterPuenteandRamos
shotthepolicecarninetimes,OfficerSanchezreturnedfire,however,hemissedthe
suspectscar.Over40officers,K9unitsandahelicopterarrivedtoassistOfficerSanchez
tolocatetheperpetrators.Theoffendershadabandonedtheircarandthehelicopter
spottedtheminaditch.
OfficerDeckardJr.wastakentotheSanAntonioMilitaryMedicalCenter.Doctors
wereunabletoremovethebulletfromhisbrain.Whileonlifesupport,theofficerwasin
criticalcondition.However,heremainedstableandaswellassuspected.Hewaskepton
lifesupportuntilDecember20,2013sohisorganscouldbedonated.
RamosandPuentewereapprehended.TheyweretakentotheWilsonCountyJail
andchargedwithaggravatedassaulttoapeaceofficerandcapitalmurderwithbailsetat
$1millioneach.Itisunknownwhoofficiallyshottheofficer,howeverinvestigatorshave
suspectedthatRamoswastheonewhoshotthebelievedtobe9mmsemiautomaticgun.

Althoughhisfamily,friendsandtheoverallcommunityisstillgrievinganddistraught,
theyhavebannedtogethertoorganizeafootballgameinmemoryofhim.Thefirstannual
RobertBobbyDeckardBowlistotakeplaceonMay3,2014attheUniversityof
IncarnateinSanAntonio,Texas.OfficerRobertDeckardJr.wasoneofthreeofficersof
OfficerEarnestHerrerasacademyclasswhohavefallen.OfficerHerrera,aswellasmany
otherindividualstooktimeoutoftheirdaytodonatebloodinOfficerDeckardshonor.
Agonizingly,OfficerDeckardwasnotthefirstorlasttopassawayinthislineof
work.Hisbadgewasofficially107andretiredonJanuary4,2014at1:52PM.Most
peopledonotunderstand,comprehendorrealizethatpoliceofficers,firefighters,EMTs
andotheremergencypersonnelrisktheirlifeeverydaytoattempttomaintainasafe
environmentforsociety.
