s you all know,

here at PS 76 we
have our spectacular
fifth grade band.
Band exists to give
students an opportuni-
ty to choose an instru-
ment, to learn how to
play it, and learn re-
sponsibility. Playing
also makes the stu-
dents think.
The instruments in
band are the flute, the
clarinet, bass clarinet,
tenor and alto saxo-
phones, bari-
saxophone, tuba,
trumpet, trombone,
French horn and per-
cussion instru-
ments. The
students get to
pick their in-
struments in the be-
ginning of Septem-
ber.
The band practices
Mondays, Wednes-
days, and Fridays af-
ter school. Certain
groups have lessons

Word of the Week
helps you with words.
Ms. Pantano and Ms.
Laks pick the words of
the week. It is hard
for them to pick only
one word because
there are so many.
They get their Tier 2
words from a list on
the computer. That is
why they have so
many words to choose
from.
There is Word of the
Week because our
teachers want to im-
prove our vocabulary.
They want us to un-
derstand what were
reading. They try to
use words well see in
our books. You need

teaches vocal tech-
niques, how to warm
up your voice well,
how to get the best
sound from your
voice, and how to sing
different styles of
songs.
PS 76 did have a cho-
rus several years ago.
Recently, Ms. Roman
felt bad for the kids
who deserved to have
a place to sing after
school. So she decided

now there are 99 peo-
ple in band. Accord-
ing to Ms. Parr, she
likes band because
she loves playing
music. She loves
making music with
students and seeing
progress in kids play-
ing.
Some special events
this spring are the
Bronx parade and the
ETM Festival. As
part of the spring con-
certs, the band plays
outside in the school
yard. They call it
Concert under the
Stars. The band has
also won a certificate
for participating in
the festival.

re you bored reading the
same books? Well, if you
are, Id recommend you read
the book, Smile. The book is
based on a real story. The
main character is the author,
Raina Telgemeier. Its a non-
fiction book based on how she
went through middle school
with braces and ugly teeth.
You should read it because its
like a comic book, which
makes it even better. There
are pictures everywhere, and
not a lot of words, but its a
big book. Another fun thing
about this book is it is written
with Roman numerals! So
you can start learning about
them. You can show your
teacher that you know the Ro-
man numerals, and she will
be impressed.

The chorus will be performing
at the Spring Concert in June.
If youre wondering how to
get into chorus, students are
chosen at the beginning of the
year by how they do in their
regular music class with Ms.
Parr. Chorus practices every
Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30.

songs that shes teaching stu-
dents now are Happy,
Count on Me, The Canoe
Song, and Roar. Different
solo voices are showcased.

us to use higher level words.
These words will also be seen
in our reading. That sounds
pretty cool to me!
Restaurant Review:
Olive Garden
By Mya Reyes
M
mm. You could smell the
delicious food at Olive
Garden in Manhattan. You
are probably wondering about
Olive Garden. Well, it might
be a little expensive, but thats
okay because you are going to
have a great time. The food is
excellent. If I rate it, I would
give it a ten on a scale from 1
to 10.
They have a menu for adults
and a menu for children. The
children have two activities in
their menu: coloring and
mazes. They give you three
different colored crayons.
Sometimes I pick out of the
adult menu. Seating can be
easy, but you have to come
early because when you arrive
late, youll have to wait. They
will give a grownup a buzzer,
and when it buzzes your table
is ready.
There are three floors to Ol-
ive Garden in Manhattan. I
like sitting on the top because
I see amazing views. Youll
love Olive Garden. You might
want to go every day. So
come in. Youll be glad.
