Gay Marriage: Right or Wrong?
Gay marriage has been the hot topic of this decade, which doesnt seem to be dwindling
down anytime soon. As much as it seems right to give equality and freedom to all types of
humans and relationships, many people ,who are rooted deep in their old fashioned values, seem
to have a hard time accepting the matter of facts: our world is progressing and moving forward.
According to the web article Gay Marriage, Same-Sex marriage has now been legalized in 14
U.S states and the District of Columbia: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island,
Vermont, and Washington which shows the slow progression of open mindedness that is taking
place in the world. All humans should have the ability to do or to marry whatever or whomever
makes them happy. Though there are differences in values and tradition, no one has the right to
place constrictions or barriers on a persons rights, no matter what the controversy. People
should have the ability to do and believe whatever they want and others should not preach and
shove their beliefs onto others throats.
Religion and belief play a big role in this controversy. In many cases, people with
religion are the ones who are against gay marriage since marriage traditionally consisted of a
woman and man in the holy books. Adding to that, and politically speaking, the republican party
also is mostly against gay marriages since it is conservative. Democrats on the other hand, thrive
on the concept of equality and propelling the world forward and into a fairer state. In greater

detail, politicians and government officials worry that gay marriage would weaken the marriage
institution by raising the divorce rates in different states. Another concern is that Gay marriage
could potentially lead down a "slippery slope" giving people in polygamous, incestuous, bestial,
and other nontraditional relationships the right to marry (Love and Pride). These might be
outlandish ideas, however just fifty years ago, gays and lesbians simply coming out about their
sexuality was the most devilish and disgusting thing a person could do; and a decade before that,
interracial marriages were also very much looked down upon. Evidence that our world, over
time, is becoming more and more open to new things, which can be both a positive and a
negative.
On the other side of the spectrum, people who dont mind gay marriage and are pro for it,
have reasons of their own . The main reason behind it, is the idea that all of the people of this
earth deserve to marry and love whoever they want, no matter if it heterosexual, or homosexual.
Based on the constitution's promise of liberty and equality, they should be free to do so and
statistics from the Huffington Posts article Why Gay Marriage Is So Controversial in America
says that the states that have allowed same-sex marriages into their government, have dropped
their divorce rates by at least 10%. Lastly, gay marriages would promote more stable homes by
adopting foster children; whereas, others might say that gay marriages will result in unstable and
immoral homes.
There are positives as well as drawbacks to any debate, however it is wrong to put
restriction and prevent humans from being themselves, because it is not in anybodys position to
do so - people should keep to their own business. If they do not like homosexuality or the
concept of gay marriages, it is not basis of their character, not their sexual orientation. They are
entitled to love and do what they want to: People might not agree, however it is not in their

position to teach them, or fix them, or in an way, shape, or form, determine their fate.
Therefore, Gay Marriage is neither right nor wrong, it is simpler than that. Humans should be
entitled to their own opinions and beliefs and should keep to themselves. In that way, a world of
peace and reason would be ours.
