1. Reocurrence of Triangles. Characters mention the significance of three throughout the play, We three can have a cup of tea together and Now we can all three enjoy ourselves! and Hedda mentions going into the triangle? of a relationship. Theres another a desire for triangular relationships from the Judge between the mistress Hedda and Mr.s Tesma, the master of house. Constantly there a hint towards the 3 pointed love triangles, or not so love filled three way relationships between characters.
2. Impulsiveness by thoughtlessness The only reason Hedda has arrived where she is wedded to Tesman from thoughtlessness. She Secretary Falk's villa that first constituted a bond of sympathy between George Tesman and me.
3. Heddas name is significant and means contention, strife, just as her character constantly feels strife in her situtation of being married in life.
4. A sense of danger lingers throughout the play with the existence of Heddas pistols and her setting them off, and this is contrasted by Mr. Tesmans pristinely correct and near perfect manner and treatment of people. He always ends up needing to act morally right, whereas Hedda rejoices in freedom and acting brashly. The two worlds at play help to ignite each other, being able to see each others contrast so clearly.
5. Manipulation and Power. Mrs. Elvstead wants to have power over moulding a humans destiny. As Hedda wants to be the one manipulating all the people in her life
6. Fire images: smoking, burning Theas hair, burn up, fire, wood in the stove, burning up Theas child aka. the manuscript. The fire images paint a certain picture and the burning of the manuscript sets the tone and climax to give way to a progression of mourning, darkness, and death, and finally as Mrs. E says the end.
Underlying Principle
