SUCCESSFUL CIVILIZATION Carly Zech Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b SECTION 1 The scorching hot, blistery climate of the desert is strenuous to thrive and live in successfully. The pellu- cid skies are crystal blue, sometimes speckled with lit- tle white puffs of clouds. Sand encircles almost every- thing, leaving the entire area with colossal sand dunes that do not allow people to see beyond the community. The sizzling, light brown sand boils the citizens feet as they walk to reach the prolonged river for icy water. In- side the cold, pure blue water there is another life, a sh life. The vulnerable sh have to be careful though, because there are ferocious, green-scaled crocodiles that could eat four harmless sh in one bite. These Upon this landscape the civilization of Carlyoliollias will be born. Sometimes jumping vigorously high, they caper as tall as the pulpy grasses on the verge of the waterway. The smells of the crisp dates hover throughout the area. The deliciously sweet fresh fruits grow on the towering palm trees. These Areca palms are bestrewed all along the extended river. At night, the temperature can drop below freezing, and people can see themselves breath- ing. Throughout the night when the citizens are asleep, they can hear the loud bullfrogs as they continuously croak along the riverbank. Sometimes these sounds wake the citizens and sometimes help them sleep. It is in the favorable geographic environment that the civilization of Carlyoliollias will be founded. It is a civili- zation whose design takes its inspiration from the study of past civilizations such as the Arabs, the Aztecs, the Greeks, the Mayans, the Mesopotamians, and the Ro- mans, among others. This book will document the nec- essary steps to take in order to create a successful civili- zation. 2 Date fruit are an important food for living in dry places such as an oasis. http://images.wisegeek.com/dates-growing-on-a-date-palm.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b People are children of their environments -Shinichi Suzuki CHAPTER 1 3 Modifications Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b SECTION 1 Part I - Analysis of the Problem The rst step in building a successful civilization is to secure basic human needs such as food and water. Due to its geography, the major challenges the civilization of Carlyoliollias faces in achieving a basic food and wa- ter supply include the following. 1. The desert is an extremely harsh place to create a suc- cessful civilization, owning up to the fact that there are blinding windstorms that would demolish the crops. If Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Human Changes to the Land 4 Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b all of the crops perished, there will be no food to eat. With barely any food left, some of the camels would eat what there is remaining and then the civilization will not have any food enduring. If all of the civilizations food resources died, then the people of Carlyoliollias would have no food prevailing and the civilization would be lifeless. 2. Since the desert is exceedingly dry, it is hard to create a successful civilization. This process is excruciatingly challenging because with the heat and how parched the desert is, all of the water could evaporate during a drought, which could last for years. With no water, peo- ple would have to wait for annual rainfall and collect as much water as possible. Yet, after a while, the citizens would run out of water because there is nothing they could do to collect more because of the desiccated and barren climate. With no water, the civilization would be lost. Part II - Proposed Solutions To make sure that a civilization thrives; it has to be able to alter its environment so that it can develop a stable food supply. An environ- mental modication is when someone or something changes the area around them- selves to t their needs. For ex- ample, using the slash and burn technique to clear land to make land for shelter and 5 People used this technique (slash and burn) to clear land fast. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Mank era,_Crops_planted_in_desert.jpg Slash and Burn: relat- ing to, or denoting a method of agriculture in which existing vegeta- tion is cut down and burned off before new seeds are sown, typically used as a method for clearing forest land for farming. Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b crops is an example of a modication. If a civilization does not make changes to the area and environment, then they will not be suitable for them to live there, and will not thrive as a civilization. Since the civilization of Carlyoliollias is located in a de- sert, there is little protection available to maintain crops from being destroyed by devastating windstorms. To x this problem, Carlyoliollias citizens would build dikes that could block wind to save the crops. The envi- ronmental modications made by the people of Carlyo- liollias in order to protect the crops from ruining are similar to the environmental modications made by the Aztecs. Since their ancient city was near a lake, the Az- tecs had ooding problems that could destroy the city. To solve this problem, the Aztecs created A dike 10 miles long that ran along the east side of the city to hold back oodwaters (Frey 275). While the Aztecs built dikes to stop oods, the Carlyoliollians would construct a dike to block wind. Therefore, the powerful air cur- rents would not destroy the crops and disrupt the stable food supply. Since the civilization of Carlyoliollias is located in a de- sert, the air is exceptionally moistureless and is hard to keep the water from vaporizing. To x this problem, the Carlyoliollas citizens would build aqueducts that will start from the Nile Rivers origin. Therefore, if the wa- ter from the Nile ever volatilizes, there would be water coming from another source. In order to prevent water shortage, the environmental changes needed to be made by the people of Carlyoliollias are similar to the 6 A dike would block wind to prevent the crops from demolishing. http://ambergriscaye.com/pages/mayan/artfengler/faf_dikes.j pg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b environmental modications made by the Aztecs. Since the water pipes are open, leaves and bugs could get into the pipes. To solve this problem, the Aztecs made two pipes so that While one pipe was being repaired, the other could transport water (Frey 275). The Aztecs built aqueducts to feed the crops. The people of Carlyo- liollias would assemble aqueducts that will bring water to the civilization in case the river dries up so that the water supply would never expire. While one pipe was being repaired the other pipe could transport water. http://tolnai-history7.wikispaces.com/le/view/Aztecaqueduct2.JPG/2 09496876/Aztecaqueduct2.JPG 7 Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b The peoples good is the highest law. -Cicero CHAPTER 2 8 Law and Government Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b SECTION 1 Lesson #1: Laws Determined One of the various lessons that could be learned from Athens, is making sure that the citizens of the civiliza- tion admires the laws that are produced by the Athe- nian government. Athens had a democracy; only men over 18 who live and were born in Athens could be a part of the Athenian assem- bly. If all citizens had the write to speak at assemblies then the government would have different opinions Maintaining Civil Order 9 Assembly- a group of people gathered to- gether in one place for a common purpose. Source: Oxford Diction- ary Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b where with these opinions other citizens could under- stand why it is a good or bad law. As stated by Frey, Every citizen had the right to speak at assembly meet- ings (261). This is a good lesson to keep for the civiliza- tion because if you allow everyone to speak at an assem- bly then there would be no laws that cause re- bellion. If the government of Carlyoliol- lias makes laws that af- fect people in a bad way, the people could rebel and over- power the government. In order to prevent unfortunate events like rebellion, the government of Carlyoliollias could hold assemblys where the citizens are free to speak on their behalf to say if they agree with the law or not. Once the government publishes the law, after about a month the city would hold a meeting where the citizens would talk about how the law affects them in a good or a bad way.Learning from Athens, the civilization of Carlyoliol- lias should let the people have the right to speak on their behalf to talk about their opinion saying if they agree the law or disagree with the law. Lesson #2: Political Equality The following lesson the people of Carlyoliollias could take from Athens would be to have political equality. In Athens, women could not inherit or own much prop- erty. They could not even vote at the assembly but worse than that, they were not even allowed to attend the assembly. As stated by Frey, only men were con- sidered citizens in Athens. Women and slaves were not. As a result, they had far fewer rights than free man did (264). The government of Carlyoliollias should al- low women and slaves to be a part of the government because women and slaves should have the same rights as men. Over all, there are more women and slaves than the total amount of men in the Greek city-states. This is important because if women and slaves did not have the same political rights, learning from past events in 10 Having an assembly will help the citizens be free to speak if the agree or disagree with the law. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/96/Gaius_ Gracchus_Tribune_of_the_People.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b history, the women and slaves could rebel against the government and overpower. The civilization of Carlyo- liollias will take the lesson of political equality and al- low women to be a citizen, a part of the assembly and have a part in the government. Lesson #3: Laws Written Down The people of Carlyoliollias should learn form Rome would be not writing down the laws have some bad ef- fects. In Rome, the patricians were the wealthier citi- zens of the civilization. Because they had more power than the plebeians they felt that it was right to change the law to help themselves. The mistake made by the Romans would be that be- cause the laws were not written down, patricians of- ten changed or interpreted the laws to benet them- selves (Frey 319). The people of Carlyoliollias would learn from this by writing the laws down for the public to view. The civilization of Carlyoliollias would do this because the people of the government or upper class citizens would not be able to interpret the laws just be- cause they want to. This is im- portant to do because if the laws were written down on stone tablets like the Twelve Tables the upper class citi- zens would not be able to change or interpret the laws to suit themselves. Making a big mistake like Rome did, is not an option for the civilization of Carlyoliollias that is why the civilization should write down the laws so that people could not change them. 11 By having laws written down on signs higher class citizens will not be able to interpret them. Source: Oxford Dictionary Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b Code of Laws The civilization of Carlyoliollias has major complica- tions of equality and treating everyone as an individual. The one challenge that Carlyoliollias faces the most is equality. Because of this, there is always a risk of a dis- pute about how people are different, and how that is bad or good. Laws help with these things; it regulates peoples lives, even sometimes their behavior. For exam- ple one of the laws for Hammurabis Code was, If a man knock out the teeth of his equal, his teeth shall be knocked out. This is and example of an important law because when one person is treated one way, the others should be treated as equals. In all, people different, or the same should all be treated alike, after all, together we are all human beings alive and free. Having major laws in Carlyoliollias is extremely important. Laws are needed because they are like instructions that the peo- ple should follow in order for the civilization to thrive. Laws would keep the civilization running. Without laws, there would be chaos and conicts. As time goes by some of the laws might change. The laws would only change if ALL citizens agree to change them. It is written that all people shall follow these laws: I. If you mistreat a slave 3 times or more you have to let them free and pay them 15 Carls. II. If a parent strikes their child, they shall be taken away from the child and may never see that child again. The parent would be sent to prison for 12 years. 12 Having laws like these help keep the civilization safe and helps maintain order. Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b III. All citizens must have evidence to show that they are a real citizen (born in Carlyoliollias). IV. If one person murders another, the murderer shall serve life terms or may be executed. V. If one person steals from another person, the stealer has to return the items, and the person who was stolen from is allowed to enter the thief house and take three items. The thief shall be prisoned for 3 years. The laws that were written above would help make Carlyoliollias a successful civilization by making sure all citizens look at everyone as an individual. For exam- ple, one of carlyoliolliass laws is If one person steals from another person, the stealer has to return the items, and the person who was stolen from is allowed to enter the thief house and take three items. The thief shall be prisoned for 3 years. This is an important law to really understand and analyze because a thief is a different person than others. They are different in there own way, maybe they had a rough childhood, or maybe they were bullied because they were different. This could be a reason why they committed the crime. Maybe if peo- ple look at them the same as others they would not have committed the crime. Everywhere in Carlyoliollias there are different people, people think that these people are not like them and that they are strange be- cause they do not look like that person. Another example of a helpful law is one that Hammurabi cre- ated, If a man strike a free-born woman so that she lose her unborn child, he shall pay ten shekels for her loss. This is an important law be- cause this is treating someone as an equal as well as and individual. Laws will change the way people look at each other. If all people follow these 13 Hammurabi's code contained many laws that helped run the civilization at that time and kept it from chaos. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CSNspqFQ4eU/U NL7fdzKmEI/AAAAAAAAAAY/eZTITsIxg 4E/s1600/SteleOfHammurabi.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b laws, all citizens shall accept everyone as an individual. Laws will also enhance order between the citizens. Laws would only not be necessary if all people fol- lowed laws. Without laws, there would be competition for survival between the strongest men and women. Laws are extremely nec- essary in order to main- tain a successful civili- zation. Political Leadership: Julius Caesar In order to create a suc- cessful civilization a leader must make each citizen happy and earn his or her trust. Julius Caesar made many great successful deci- sions to create a suc- cessful civilization. One of the great deci- sions that he made is that he gave work to many Romans who had lost their jobs due to the growing amount of slave numbers. Julius Cae- sar did this because with all of the in- coming prisoners who Caesar turned into slaves Roman farmers and labor- ers had no jobs. To solve this he gave jobs to them to work on roads, building and other government related construction. For ex- ample With so many slaves to do the work, thousands of farmers and laborers had no jobs (Frey 330). This is an effect of Julius bringing over all of these other peo- ple. With all these other people, Romans lost their jobs. This is a huge problem that Caesar created by bringing over prisoners. To stop all of the poor and prisoners 14 Caesar made great choices that solve many of Romes problems. http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130 606052821/spartacus/images/5/55/Juliusca esar.jpg Many Roman farmers and laborers lost their jobs due to uprising slave numbers. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NusRsTAmVk 8/T6Azug9onLI/AAAAAAAAITc/3pAp 8HzPjw8/s1600/Farmer%2BLife%2Bro man%2Bscenes.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b Caesar built types of entertainment to occupy their inter- ests in working. In the end of Caesars life the senate murdered him by stabbing him 23 times. This could have been an effect from Caesar taking all the power and xing all of the problems of the civilization that the senate was supposed to solve before he replaced them. It is ne to bring over prisoners from land Carlyoliollias conquered, but replacing the Romans with these people is not ne, that is why Carlyoliollias should have enter- tainment to keep people engaged and not be interested to work. The main lesson that Carlyoliollias will take from Julius is that its ok to bring prisoners from lands that have been conquered, but it is not ok to replace these new people with the old people by taking away their jobs. To prevent events such as this Carlyoliollias will have free events for slaves like a rodeo for entertainment, just as Caesar did. This would help because it would take away the interest of working for the lower class-men and will transfer that interest to doing something that they truly enjoy. For example, To keep the poor happy, he staged gladiator contests they could watch for free. (Julius Caesars Rule as Dictator). This illustrates that Julius Caesar was trying to keep the poor and slaves to gain interest of working and replacing the Romans with their jobs. If the poor replaced the Romans with them- selves, the Romans could have the ability to rebel be- cause they no longer have jobs to earn money for a liv- ing. The civilization of Carlyoliollias will stage contests 15 Gladiator contests would be held for entertainment but all they did was encourage ghting on the streets that made the civilization more dangerous. http://factsanddetails.com/media/2/20120227-Bestiarii2.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b or shows that keep interests of working away from the poor or slaves. Augusts Caesar After Caesars death Augustus took the power and made some major improvements on the city. During Augustuss rule he made libraries and supported the arts. Because he did this people could now have an edu- cation and would be able to learn about not only their civilization but also other civilizations and their ways of living. He built Romes rst library and he also en- couraged many of his wealthy friends to provide nan- cial support to writers and artists. (Political Leader- ship of Caesar Augustus). This shows that Augustus cared about not just the education of his citizens he also cared about how his civilization looked. He encourages music and other types of arts. Augustus encouraged many different types of art and writing, but while do- ing this he made major improvements by beautifying the civilization. Augustus not only made improvements on the city he also made some problems come up. One of the prob- lems that he created is that he gave special laws to un- married adults and childless couples lost their right to inherit property and money. This is a major problem be- cause what Augustus didn't realize is that maybe adults didn't want to have children and get married, but be- cause of Augustus adults were pressured to have chil- dren and get married. After they had their children that 16 To show how much the city loved Augustus they built an arch called the Arch of Augustus 27 B.C.. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4rt8ZNTPE3M/S_7Bkv3B1YI/AAA AAAAAJJY/iQuF06TMvSM/s1600/ZIMG_B247.JPG Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b they did not want they may not treat them right. For ex- ample, The state offered rewards-such as political privi- leges and tax relief-to couples who stayed together and had many children, while unmarried adults and child- less couples lost their right to inherit money and property. (Political Leader- ship of Caesar Augustus). This shows that the government penalized adults who were unmarried and childless. This is not fair because if someone has a child they don't like they they may hurt them or not give them the life they de- serve because they don't want them. This shows that having child and mar- riage laws are not ok to have and can cause major problems for the civiliza- tion. Learning from Augustus, the civiliza- tion of Carlyoliollias will encourage the arts and education and will also not pass laws that may interfere with peoples personal lives. The civilization of Carlyoliollias will encourage the arts and education by adding a library to the city. This will help because when a citizen is in the mood to learn something new or how to do something all they would have to do is walk a lit- tle bit to the closest library and nd the book that they were looking for. This would help because instead of having to go to a trade fair they could just walk and the book would not cost anything. Carlyoliollias will also encourage education by creating schools for children. We will nd teachers by giving tests to the citizens that would like to teach. The top 10 people with the highest 17 Having a library will give the chance of education to citizens. Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b score will be teachers. Carlyoliollias will encourage the arts by creating programs like a band or creating an art studio. Doing this might let the people do what they love like painting or drawing. This is not only letting the citizens do what they love but it also beauties the city. Encouraging things such as the arts and education can help the civilization gain knowledge which could lead them to greater ideas about how to advance the civilization. Decline of the Western Roman Empire One of the main reasons why the Roman Empire de- clined was because of the decline in morals and values. There was a decline in morals and values because of the gladiator ghts in Rome. When the citizens of Rome watched these gruesome ghts the get the idea that its ne to ght peo- ple to their death. These ghts are sup- posed to be en- tertainment for people. People see everyone having a good time and smiling so they think that peo- ple enjoy it when people murder each other. For exam- ple, Should the ground become too soaked with blood, it was covered over a fresh layer of sand and the Having Roman gladiator contests made the citizens think that because everyone was hav- ing fun if was a good idea to start ghting each other. 18 The decline of morals and values was why the Roman Empire fell. http://www.moonbattery.com/visigoths_in_rome.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b performance went on (Decline of the Western Roman Empire). This quote deeply illustrates that while people fought it was extremely gruesome. Because people en- joyed these ghts, they brought the ghts home with them. They used this ghting on the streets. This made the streets exceedingly danger- ous. Because the streets were so dangerous people were fright- ened to walk at night and some- times during the day. This ght- ing led to a decline because with all of the violence outside of the Roman coliseum people were kill- ing each other even killing the emperors just because they thought it was entertainment. Another one of the reasons of the decline of the Roman Empire was because of the extensive military spending. Having a military is good protection for the city but is also exceedingly expensive. Be- cause it was so expensive to have, the civilization had to cut down on spending money on the city for improve- ment. The city could have used the money for building public houses or for aqueducts or for maintaining the roads. For example, The emperors were forced to raise taxes frequently which in turn led again to increase in- ation(Decline of the Western Ro- man Empire). This shows that be- cause the military was so expensive the soldiers and citizens got higher taxes to pay for the military. Because the taxes were higher, people became frustrated that they were not using the money towards the civilization, they got so frustrated that most of them lost their desire to defend their civilization. Having a military is a great way to defend the civilization but to raise taxes for people to pay is one of the main reasons why the Western Rome declined. The civilization of Carlyoliollias will take steps to prevent a decline in the civilization by not encouraging ght, and to make sure The Roman Military was a great defense but had great problems that come with it. It was ex- tremely expansive to have so the citizens of Rome had ot pay special taxes that really aggra- vated them. http://www.uncp.edu/home/rwb/roman_legion2. jpg 19 Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b that the army has enough money to function. By not en- couraging ght the streets will be safe to walk on and people will not be frightened to leave their house. The civiliza- tion will not en- courage ght by not hav- ing types of entertain- ment such as gladiator ghts. In- stead the civiliza- tion will have horse (in mine- craft its pig) races held in the coliseum. Also the civilization will not raise taxes for the military but have the same taxes throughout the entire year. The civilization will do this so that the people will become used to the amount and not get frus- trated with uprising taxes that are being used to- wards the military. In summary, the civiliza- tion of Carly- oliollias will prevent oc- currences like a de- cline in the civilization by having a plan to fol- low to fur- ther the civilization. 20 This is one of the law signs that are posted all around Carlyoliollias and will stay there forever to clearly state that ght- ing is not acceptable. Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b As a {person} believes, so will the person act. -Sam Harris CHAPTER 3 21 Belief Systems Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b SECTION 1 Introduction: The teachings within a belief system play a gigantic role in a civilization. The teachings can affect the way people think, their character, and their behaviors. With- out a belief system, people would make decisions with- out considering right from wrong. Ultimately, people are going to make immoral decisions, but by having a belief system people will learn how to make good choices and promote noble actions. Confucianism, Buddhism, and Hinduism, are all belief systems that Impact of Belief Systems 22 Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b teach the morals of trust. Having a belief system is im- portant because it encourages respect and trust. To better understand the role of belief systems within a civilization and how they can inuence the actions and decisions of people, consider the following moral di- lemma: A Callous Passerby Roger Smith, a skillful swimmer, is out for a leisurely stroll. During the course of his walk he passes by a de- serted pier from which a teenage boy who apparently cannot swim has fallen into the water. The boy is screaming desperately for help. Smith recognizes that there is absolutely no danger to himself if he jumps in to save the boy; he could easily succeed if he tried. Nev- ertheless, he chooses to ignore the boy's cries. "Why should I inconvenience myself for this kid," Smith says to himself, and passes on. In a situation such as a Callous Passerby, a Hindu would save the drowning boy because his action would demonstrate respect to one another and that the man could be granted a higher class role in his next life. If a Hindu was caught in this situa- tion, they would go through a differ- ent men- tal proc- ess than other people who might think differently. They would probably rst think about how their civilization be- lieves that everyone should care for one another. For ex- ample, Hindus respect all life forms and avoid doing them harm(Frey 148). This shows that Hindus are ex- tremely mindful for everyone and especially for ones soul. By saving the boy, his action would be showing re- spect for all life. This shows that respecting all life is a form of trust. Respecting all life is a form of trust be- cause the boy would be able to trust this man because 23 All Hindus respect all life and try to avoid causing harm to them. http://www.teluguone.com/teluguoneUserFiles/Hindu%20 5.png Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b he had saved him when no one else did. In addi- tion, the Hindu could be granted a higher class role in his next life. For exam- ple, When a person died, his or her soul was reborn into a new body. But what type of body would the re- born soul get? The answer depends on the souls karma (Frey 149). This shows that if a Hindu saves this boy he could be rewarded into a better role in his next life. He could even be reborn into his mentors place. If the man was rewarded a higher class in his next life, he could be respected more by the lower class citizens. If the Hindu were to save the boy, the Hindu would be fol- lowing their belief systems focus on respect and posi- tive karma and the boy would know that he could trust the man who had saved him. In comparison, a Buddhist caught in this dilemma would also save the suffer- ing boy because a rule of the Eightfold path is to live a life of selessness. If a Buddhist was to just walk away from this situation and pretend like he did not hear this boy suffering, he is showing selshness. The drowning boy needs to trust that a Buddhist would be seless. For exam- ple, Live a life of self- less- ness (not selsh- ness), love, and non vio- lence (Frey 159). Based on this example, all Buddhists should live by this rule. By obeying this rule there would be great trust between the boy and the man be- cause this man had saved his life when no other person 24 Karma is a Belief that Hindus believed in and it showed that if people promoted good deeds and followed rules they could be reborn to a higher class. http://www.karmaville.com/blog-wp-uploads/2012/08/tumblr_ m8tatsze4m1qdolwqo1_500.jpeg Karma - (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a per- son's actions in this and pre- vious states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. If a Buddhist was to save this boy their would be deep trust and selessness in the world. In both Hinduism and Buddhism, belief systems all pro- vide trust and respect among citizens and politi- cal leaders. Promoting good deeds and good ac- tions establishes trust and respect within a civi- lization. Without trust there could be reduced respect for life and prop- erty. A civilization with- out trust could become lost. Belief system of Carlyo- liollias In an effort to create a successful civilization, the people of Carlyoliol- lias have established their own belief system. This system shares similar religious beliefs and teach- ings with other world religions. The belief system of Carlyoliollias helps citizens respect one another, pro- mote good actions, not be greedy, be well edu- cated, and have trust within the civilization. The following tenets show the core beliefs of Cameron. The belief of Cams means to promote good actions, not be greedy and respect one another. One requirement is hav- ing the wealthier citi- zens complete 30 hours of community service each year. The commu- nity service that will be assigned to the citizens will include helping con- struct the civilization, 25 The belief system of Confucianism believes that all people should respect each other no matter how old or how young animal or human respect is needed for a civiliza- tion. http://www.chinaodysseytours.com/tours/pictures/Juha-Matti-Leinonen/daybyday /chinese-painting-of-tibetan-people-d.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b picking up trash, shelving books in the town library and school, and assisting people in need. Cams relates to the belief system of Buddhisms Eightfold Path. The Eightfold Path states, Promote good actions and prevent evil actions (Frey 159). Having this belief helps people be- come better people. This helps because while they are doing the community serv- ice they see what it is like to be less wealthy and will help them realize not to take anything for granted, share and not be greedy. This will have the people pro- mote good actions because after they do the community service they will be will- ing to share their wealth, clothing and food with the less fortunate people. Cams is an important belief because it helps people realize that they need to respect the lower class and help a friend in need. The second tenet in the belief system of Carlyoliollias is called Axander. Axander means to have trust within a civilization. One example of showing trust is each year the civilization will host a fair that will promote trust. For example, there would be activities such as a trust fall. The citizens will line up depending on their status to be paired with others. Through multiple pairings, the 26 Wealthy people will complete community service hours and are likely to be put in the job of shelving book in the local church, library, and schools. Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b citizens will fall into each others arms. For example, a soldier and citizen would preform the trust fall. If they catch each other, they would know that they could trust each other. As stated by Frey, ruler and subject, hus- band and wife, father and son, older sibling and younger sibling, and friend and friend. All people must respect and obey those above them (208). This illus- trates that the belief system, Confucianism, believe in trust between different relationships. Trust is extremely important because if Carlyoliollias was under attack, then the citizens would have to trust the army to de- fend the civilization and the citizens lives. A civilization without trust is vulnerable to destruction. The third tenet in the belief system of the people in Carlyoliollias is known as Dallas. Dallas means to be a well-educated citizen of Carlyoliollias. Youth would go to school starting at the age of four ending at the age of eighteen. The youth would study writing, the history of Carlyoliollias and mathematics. Once the youth become citizens at eighteen, they have the option to continue school until they are twenty-four or abandon school. If a citizen decided to stay in school, they would have the option to go to University of Carlyoliollias Santa Cam- eron (UCSC), or go to other schools in different civiliza- tions. As stated by Frey, Values such as respect for eld- ers, proper behavior, and love of scholarship became deeply woven into Chinese society (209). In the an- cient Chinese society, education was an important con- cept for all. Education was important to them because it helps people know how to do certain jobs and teaches them important subjects that they could use within the 27 This is an image of kids around the age of eight going to school to learn how to do certain jobs and lean about different subjects. http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/images/stories/large/2012/07/09/5260 6449.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b rest of their lives. This focus on education is the same for the civilization of Carlyoliollias. With education, citi- zens will learn how to do certain jobs that aim to im- prove the civilization. Role of The Catholic Church and its Belief System in Medieval Europe The Roman Catholic Church in medieval Europe grew in both economic and political power after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476 C.E. The church grew economically because they were the ones that held all records of the town and of people. They held all records because they were the only people who knew how to read and write. In addition, the church owned the most land in the civilization. As stated by Frey, Some land came in the form of gifts from monarchs and wealthy lords (33). The church gained great amounts of land from the king and other wealthy peo- ple. This shows that in order to gain land from the king or other powerful monarchs you would have to be a higher class level on the social pyramid. And the Catho- lic Church was, the church was so important because they were the only ones who could grant salvation to someone. As stated by Frey, This meant Henry was thrown out of the church and, therefore, could not gain salvation (33). This shows that the Church had great political power because they had power to grant and take away salvation from people. The Church excommu- nicated Henry IV, which meant that he was kicked out 28 Henry IV sat outside in the freezing cold for three days begging the church to be let back into the church so he could be granted salvation. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uqdYtf7KWG4/Rlb5OQK38AI/AAAAAAAAAC0 /DXEeWioDYxw/s400/Canossa.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b and could not gain salva- tion. Henry IV sat in the wind and cold begging the church to let him back in because he wanted so badly not to go to the aw- ful underworld called hell, he wanted to go to paradise, heaven. The Roman Catho- lic Church had great power over people and even over the king, him- self therefore growing in both economic and politi- cal power. The Catholic Church inu- enced peoples thoughts and deeds during the mid- dle ages because people would want to be granted salvation. Salvation is something that a citizen can be granted by follow- ing the church teachings. If a person does not follow the churches teachings they would probably be excommunicated which mean that they would not be granted salvation and would be kicked out of the church. Around 1095, Pope Urban II gave a speech called the Speech at Council of Clermont where he stated, All who die by the way, weather by land or by sea, or in battle against the pagans, shall have immediate cancellation of sins. This shows that if a citizen had promoted bad ac- tions in his life, and had fought for Pope Urban II, all of those actions would be can- celled and he would be granted salvation if he died ghting. In conclusion, the church determines weather citizens would be granted sal- vation, because of this people would be more careful with their choices. Salvation- deliverance from sin and its consequences, be- lieved by Christians to be brought about by faith in Christ. Humanists were scholars from Europe who believed in individual dignity and believed each per- son could achieve greatness. Social standing promoted new ideas because humanists believed greatly in indi- vidual achievement, individual achievement promoted new ideas because in medieval times, people would judge people by there class and ignore them, but dur- ing the renaissance the humanists would talk and share http://photographytechtips.les.wordpress.com/2013/01/new-photography-ideas.jpg Figure 4.1 Lorem Ipsum dolor amet, consectetur Power of Ideas 31 Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b ideas with anyone. They believed that indi- vidual achievement was more important than what class they were born in to show who they were as a person. As stated by Frey, If someone was born a peasant, he or she would always have less status than a no- ble. Renaissance thinkers prized individual achievement more than a persons class or family. This illustrated that humanists did not care what class you were in or what your family was like, they tried to see past that and see what is more important, indi- vidual achievement. Instead of someone who is a higher class excluding a lower class person. Sharing ideas with one another was an enormous shift in the way of thinking during the renaissance and was a key con- cept for a successful civilization. Galileos New Ideas In 1609 a man named Galileo, who contained a human- ist mindset, and questioned the churchs teachings that the earth was the center of the universe. He threatened the churches teachings by questioning whether the Earth was the center of the universe. That question, led him to his discoveries. In fact, he discovered that the Earth was not located in the core of the universe. The church, however, didnt want Galileos discoveries to 32 New ideas are like chain reactions, new ideas can lead to many great discoveries just like how Galileo made many of his great discoveries. http://www.jeffbullas.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/30-Facebook-Timeline-Contest-I deas-That-Drive-Likes-and-Comments.jpg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b spread through the civilization. For then, the citi- zens would be- lieve the church was corrupt for approving a false fact. As stated by Frey, Church of- cials feared that attacks on the geocentric theory could lead people to doubt the churchs teach- ings (393). This illustrates that Galileos theory was a threat to the church. The church warned Galileo to never teach his theory, but Galileo did not listen. He published a book called Dialogue on the Two Chief World System. This book was about the differences on the two theorys about whether the Earth was in the center of the uni- verse. In the end, Galileo was not permitted to ever speak of his theory again. However, his theory began to spread throughout the civiliza- tion, and the church had no power to stop it from spreading. Despite all of the negative ad- versity thrust at him by the Catholic Church and the Roman Court, Galileos theory of mo- tion and the Earth persevered, and helped transgure lots of people to his theory and im- proved the Scientic Revolution. Concideration Humanists in Carlyoliollias may question beliefs or institutions threatening them, but Carlyoliollias has a notable way of handling these ideas and questions. This shows that when Galileo questioned the Catholic Church and had new ideas, people looked further into these ideas and it ended up that they were pre- cise, after people found out, the church was 33 Galileos new ideas advanced teh scientic revolution by shar- ing his new ideas. http://maryloudriedger2.les.wordpress.com/2012/05/galileo.j pg Zech, Caroline Monday, June 2, 2014 12:51:19 PM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a9:71:6b forced to change their teachings. By questioning and having new ideas can advance the civilization when people aren't afraid to be wrong and not be correct every single sec- ond. Instead of replaying history Carlyoliollias will have the gov- ernment consider the new idea or question before automatically dis- agreeing. For example, In Carlyo- liollias, once young adults reach a certain age they have an option to stay in school, to go to collage, or stop right after high school. A hu- manist might question this be- cause Carlyoliollias encourages education, but in this case kids aren't being forced to go to school; they get to have an option whether to go to college or not. The civilization may have to con- sider this new idea and maybe apply this to the civiliza- tion in order for Carlyoliollias to become more success- ful. This strategy will make for a successful civilization because people are going to question and have new ideas, but before saying no right away, the government will consider the new idea. This idea or question could improve the civilization and make for a successful civilization Queen Elizabeth I The civilization of Carlyoliollias, which greatly encourages the arts and education, was molded after the forty-ve year reign of Brit- ains most beloved Queen Eliza- beth I, under whos power cul- ture thrived.
