3. Optimistic shift from we to personal PN I
when does he do this? Why does he do this? Make sure that it fits
with this assertion ideamaybe you could pull in the pn usage of
we as well
Shifts to I halfway through speech signify shift
from past struggle to optimistic future placement
significant because we develops credibility in I
statements (organization) we have struggled
through all these things together (many struggles
he describes prior) therefore I have an idea of
the future we want makes bright future
described attainable as all of audience will be
working toward it (placement syntax)
PN usage functions as shift indicator from past to
future (how function)
Shift empowers audience we describes
troubles they have and are still struggling through
they have not yet given up, they have continued
fighting all throughout history therefore they have
power to keep fighting so I empowers them by
giving them specific aspirations lists things they
must now continue to fight for and hope that in
near future these goals will be accomplished
(contrib. to tone)
- WHY? To empower audience by giving them a
reason to not give up they are close to giving
up all hope seems lost- so must redeem hope
and resurge power in them so they are able to
continue fighting
I pn builds important part to speech makes
speech personal to audience bc I does not really
mean MLK, means all of them dreams he
speaks of are shared among them all and thus
encourages them to make these dreams come true
and preceding we allows them to realize they
have the ability to do so for they have fought for so
long already they can still fight (importance)
Affects audience by reminding them of what they
have been fighting for and giving them reasons to
not give up: bright future just out of reach
ancestors fought hard future for children unity
and equality - uses PN to strengthen this appeal
bc we establishes credibility and emotional
appeal (credible bc actual struggles each has been
through and still goes through emotional bc
difficult times, may lead to memories trigger
emotions) (affect audience why)
PN usage promote racially equal Am we depicts
am w/o racial equality therefore audience will
strive for the brighter future with racial equality
described by I I pronoun makes future
desirable to audience by appealing to them on
personal level w references to homes, cities,
children so w those in mind, audience have reason
to fight for this future so what is dear to them will
have good future (WB to why)
Encourages to continue fighting by empowering
with hopes introduces with PN I friends
America men are created equal slavery
brotherhood freedom and justice children
all aspects that personally affect audience
members so w these new dreams to share with
each other, to unify them under the same cause of
ridding Am of segregation, so now they are
encouraged to continue fighting to reach this goal
