Kennedy CHAPTER 1 1 Introduction Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Descriptive paragraph It is in this favorable/unfavorable geo- graphic environment that the civilization of Jertopia will be founded. It is a civiliza- tion whose design takes its inspiration from the study of past civilizations such as the Arabs, the Aztecs, the Greeks, the Mayans, the Mesopotamians, and the Ro- mans, among others. This book will docu- ment the necessary steps to take in order to create a successful civilization. It was another cold day we were just man- aging to get by in the city of Jertopia 2 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Modication of form is admitted to be a matter of time. Alfred Russel Wallace CHAPTER 2 3 Modifications Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Part I Analysis of the Problem The initial step in building a successful civilization is to secure basic human needs such as food and water. Due to its geographic location, the major challenges that the civilization of Jertopia faces in at- taining a sufcient supply of food and wa- ter include the following: To create an empire that can destroy all foes you need a basic food and water sup- ply. The location of the area will create problems. These problems are: things such as getting water all year round be- cause all the rivers are frozen in the win- ter and we will half to follow the food to wherever it goes so we can eat in our city also we would need some kind of lumber supply to be able to cook food that we hunt because all the wood is wet in the winter from snow. It would be hard to get basic supplies like stone too because we have no tools. The problems we will face getting water are the cold weather it will freeze water supplies and snow will cover it after winter is over the rivers will still be frozen so we need some way of un- freezing them. It would be hard to get the water from the water supply over the hills. We would need something to get the water to our civilization. We would also need a sustainable water supply dur- ing the winter. 4 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Part II - Proposed Solutions In order for a civilization to prosper, it must be able to modify the geographic area around it in order to meet the basic needs of supplying its inhabitants with food and water. The citizens of Jertopia could build dog sleds to trade with other colonies and have marked trade routes. To get food we would need to build portable shelter so our colony could follow the food wher- ever it goes and we could trade our re- courses to others for rewood and pick- axes so we can mine the recourses in the mountains. To get water we could melt the snow during the winter. Similar to other ancient civilizations, one of the most difcult challenges for the Mayans was to grow enough food for their grow- ing population (Frey 268) and the snowy mountains will not be good growing grounds for the industrious citizens of Jertopia. And during the summer we will use an irrigation system. 5 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f No man is good enough to govern another man without the other's consent. Abraham Lincoln CHAPTER 3 6 Law & Government Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Lessons on Democracy Over the years of roman governments we have learned from their mistakes like in a monarchy at rst there was a monarchy in Rome where there was one king who had power and then a successor would get elected but then the kings wanted their kin to be the next king but nally the aristocrats wanted power and they had enough to over throw the king and they did the king was no longer in throne now it was a group of aristocrats that be- came an oligarchy When it was a Oligarchy all the rulers were powerful and were all rich but all the poor were getting poorer and the rich richer then nally all of the plebian de- cided to leave cause they needed money to afford anything at the market they couldnt afford basic necessities like food and soap of bathing. Eventually the plebe- ians rebelled and then the government was overthrown and it became a tyranny During the tyranny anyone could take power if they thought they were able to Code of Laws 1. No killing other citizens if done they will be punished by death 2. No stealing if something is stolen and they nd out who stole it the item will be returned and the person will have the op- tion of cutting off on of the thiefs ngers 7 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f 3. Everyone is treated fairly if someone is made fun of or feels down- graded they have the possibility to take their belongings and live where they live but they half to talk with government of- cials to make sure that it is true 4. No classes are given more rights than others besides the king and the govern- ment 5. And the city will not be divided by who is rich and poor all citizens will live near each other and they half to respect each other 6. To be a member of the government you need to have at least four to ve extra years of school and you need to be born and raised in the city. 7. To be a citizen you need to be born and raised in the city, have gone to school for 10-15 years and you need to have 2 years of military training 8. To become a citizen you can be adopted by parents in the city, and/or be born in the city 9. Any children caught stealing or dis- obeying the law will be sent to military training length depending on value of item or amount of laws broken. 10. All citizens are able to participate in gladiator events for free. Anyone found not being a citizen will be entered in the 8 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f arena for every ght they did not pay to watch. If the citizen is 60-100 years old they will just be charged a fee for how much they did not pay 11. All slaves are allowed to not work on Sundays but they will not be paid if they decide to skip their job. 12. All slaves are allowed to go to the gladiator events once a month and will be only charged half the regular price. 13. Anyone has one chance to become a citizen when they become 18 years old but you will be forced through challenges that could end in death. Any person that is worthy will become a citizen but if a war breaks out they will half to be in the army or they will lose their citizenship. 14. Anyone found in the armory tamper- ing with the weapons will be forced to sharpen weapons for the rest of their life. They will only receive enough pay to af- ford food and other basic niceties this pen- alty will be lifted after they sharpen three times the weapons they tampered with 15. No kings are allowed to be re-elected unless the entirety of the council agrees with it all kings found bribing them will be removed from ever being king again and all their money will be forcibly re- moved. Julius Caesar Julius Caesar was one of the most power- ful rulers in history for some his ways 9 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f were not appreciated and his ways of gaining leadership were not liked but he made one of the greatest empires of all time. Julius caesar was not trying to make great wariors like other rulers but he wanted to expand all over the world and grow the empire. He made it so the poor could go to events sutch as gladiator ght- ing so they would not come up in an up- roar of not enough entertainment for the poor. To keep the poor happy, he staged gladiator contests they could watch for free. My leader would make sure all his senators are trustworthy and give them things they would want so they would not murder me I would also have a troop of 10-20 men to protect me from murder- ers and thieves. Julius Caesar was a great leader but he could have done more to protect him from being murdered a mis- take that my king will ensure does not happen. Augustus Caesar
Augustus Caesar was a great ruler for the Roman Empire. He use the Praetorian guard surround him to protect him at all times, and all Roman soldiers had to pledge allegiance to him instead of the Senate. He also treated the senators re- spectfully and gave them power to pass laws. On the other hand, Augustus had strict moral codes. If families didnt have children or didnt stay together they 10 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f would taxed more and they couldnt land. He ruled for 41 years until his death, and on his deathbed the Roman people honored him by calling him a god (Frey). In my civilization, I would follow Augustus decision to have the army pledge allegiance to the leader as well, so that the army could not overthrow the government. Augustus Caesar was one of the greatest emperors of Rome and he shaped the future of the Roman Empire for years to come. The Decline and Fall of the Western Roman Empire The problem of moral decline in Rome by the emperors could have easily been pre- vented if Nero and Caligula had been fo- cused on expanding and maintaining Rome, rather than drinking and eating. As Emperor, he should be focused on the matters of country, not the matters of his personal life. Emperors are meant to rule and command their kingdom with the wisdom needed to see it prosper. Maybe the Emperors had nothing to occupy their time like political dissent or wars. Also, the emperor may have viewed their un- limited wealth source as their own per- sonal stockpile for parties and drink, not for fueling the city. (Emperors like Nero and Caligula became infamous for wast- ing money on lavish parties where guests ate and drank until they became ill) The decline of Rome could have been pre- 11 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f vented if the Praetorian Guard was dis- banded and if the emperors were less self- ish than they were all they cared about was making the rich richer the poor poorer and themselves super rich with piles of gold, silver, iron, and diamonds if this money was focused on Rome not de- grading and becoming a giant civilization Rome would have ruled the world by now.
The way that the uproar of citizens could be prevented in the civilization of jertopia is by having annual gladiator ghts that slaves will not half to pay to see. And all proceeds made that day will be used for food and drinks for the slaves but all citi- zens will be allowed to join into a party room with plenty of food and the slaves will be given bread while sitting. We will establish police forces witch have troops of six men patrolling the city and they will be all paid by the amount of crooks they bring in and the time they spend pa- trolling so that they wont turn on the king. 50 percent of taxes will go to govern- ment 25 will go to construction funding and another 25 will go to the king. We will also establish a re department so that if something starts burning it will not catch the city on re and one to two foun- tains will be placed on each block and if there is a re. Water will be shut off every- where and only go towards the source of the re. To prevent slave and non-citizen attacks because of decreasing morality all 12 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f slaves will be allowed to not work on Sun- days and any citizens with jobs are al- lowed to skip work, but the owner has the option of not paying the citizen unless they will go without food and or water. Any citizen that cannot afford to live in a building will be able to apply for a job at the roman senate and will be asked what skills they have and they will see what jobs are open in their range. 13 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying. Joan Of Arc CHAPTER 4 14 Belief Systems Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Why do civilizations Because the belief system can have rules to live by so the civilization doesnt just go into straight chaos from ghting each other. If they didnt believe in religion there would be no moral values, no right or wrong, no yes or no. Everyone could just go around on a murder spree and rampages and no one would stop them. Some people wouldnt even care about the violence and bloodshed going on. Without religion the world would be crip- pled badly. Wars would be ravage throughout heavily populated areas that dont believe in the same religion. Even if we believe in different religions they all have rules that they need to follow. I be- lieve Napoleon Bonaparte was right when he said religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich. after all re- ligion were the rst stepping stones for humanity. In order to further examine the concept of morals and values, consider the following moral dilemma: In Europe, a woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug originally cost him to produce. He paid $400 for the ra- dium and charged $4,000 for a small dose of 15 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f the drug. The sick woman's husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money and tried every legal means, but he could only get together about $2,000, which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying, and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said, "No, I discovered the drug and I'm go- ing to make money from it." So, having tried every legal means, Heinz gets desperate and considers breaking into the man's store to steal the drug for his wife. If Heinz was Buddhist he would not try to steal the medicine but only if he was very religious. If there were only one type of medicine that could help his wife he would not try to steal it because Buddhist give up all cravings. He would give up his craving for the medicine for inner peace, but only if he was very religious be- cause if he was not he would probably steal the medicine. Only because it would save his wifes life that is a tough decision that he would need to make but he would give up the craving for the medicine but he would let his wife die. I do not think that he will live a life of inner peace if he lets his wife die but he will still be follow- ing the religion. In the eightfold path is says (Right action Do not kill, steal, or lie. Be honest Frey). I think that he might be able to get to get the doctor to give him the medicine if he persuaded the doctor with the eightfold path and telling him that he would live a life of shame because 16 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f he just let someone die because they could not afford the medicine even though Heinz offered more than just the money. If Heinz were Hindu I think that he would steal the medicine. It would lower his karma buy stealing the medicine but it would raise his karma by saving his wifes life. I think that stealing the medi- cine would have no bad effect on him ex- cept getting arrested for stealing but he should still be able to get a fair trial be- cause it was based on saving someones life. He would be reincarnated into a bet- ter life when he dies because he saved someone elses life. Though the doctor is following his dharma (to follow ones dharma means to perform ones duties and so to live as one should Frey: 148) he is charging a very high price but that medicine only cost the doctor only 1/10th of the price to manufacture but since he is following his dharma his karma cannot be subtracted because he is doing what he was meant to do. After all I think that Heinz should steal the medicine to save his wife because all it can do is make his karma go up because he saves a life. If Heinz believed in Confucianism he would not steal the medicine because in the religion it says do not do things to other people you do not want to happen to you. This rule would prevent him from stealing the medicine because he 17 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f wouldnt want someone to break into his store and steal his medicine. A belief system is the most important part about a civilization. They provide the rst stepping-stones to becoming one of the greatest rulers ever. Having a belief sys- tem doesnt just provide the rst stepping-stones for becoming a civiliza- tion, they provide moral values that the civilization needs to keep all their citizens in line. In worldwide religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, etc. they all follow moral values that keep them from going on a murdering ram- page because it isnt morally right to do so. Religion is the most important part of any civilization because it keeps your citi- zens happy and you a great ruler. In an effort to create a successful civiliza- tion, the people of Jertopia have estab- lished their own belief system. It shares similar religious beliefs and teaching with other world religions and helps the peo- ple of Jertopia live with strong moral val- ues. Here are some examples. The rst value of Jertopia is Vennaht, Vennaht teaches our citizens to use non-hurtful speech towards others or using hurtful words that may harm others emotionally and/or mentally. Our citizens obtain Ven- naht by explaining to others what caused it and how to stop it. To prevent this from 18 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f happening if this gossip is passed onto the king or queen and proven false, the starter of the act will be ned depending on how bad the rumor was. To prevent swearing if you are heard swearing by authorities you would half to spend 10 minuets in the same spot until the authori- ties tell you you can leave. One of the most important morals in our civilization is Dehn. Dehn is focused on the job you have, if you dont have a good time doing your job you shouldnt do it. It doesnt mean that you should just sit around and get paid. It just means that you shouldnt stress out about your job if you dont like it. If you dont like what youre doing you nd a new job that you will enjoy. Dehn is shown by our every day workers because they all are working their hardest because they like what they do. It make us function quicker and we are ready for anything in an instant be- cause everyone knows what there sup- posed to do when and where. It helps us greatly in every day business and we pro- duce the nest weapons, shields, pottery, Etc. this came in play when our civiliza- tion was going slowly and poorly when someone suggested why do what you dont want to when you can do what you do. It made us amazingly fast expanding over vast territories. After all this helped us expand over territories amazingly vast and make amazing things that everyone wants. 19 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f The last moral value we live by is Chare, Chare means to donate to the poor and not to expect anything in return. Our citi- zens need to show Chare to keep the poor from starving and everyone happy. Every- one is expected to give about 1% of their daily pay to charity or the homeless. This teaches our citizens to share with others and not to be a greedy person. This was adopted from Islamic religions notion of Zakat, where Muslims donate 2.5% of their wealth to help the poor and to fund charities. We admired this practice and thought it would help us greatly. We adopted this from the Islamic religion be- cause when we were just starting we were being attacked but luckily the Is- lams were strong allies with the invaders and stopped them. Because of their kind- ness we wanted to give back and cherish what they have done for us. By giving the poor what they need to survive they in re- turn help us grow. Chare also decreased crime rates by 50% now it is much easier to catch criminals because there arent as many. This contributed greatly to us and it helps up Thrive. The Rise of Feudalism and the Catholic Church he fall of Rome lead to Feudalism and the Roman Catholic Church because after Rome fell everyone had a need for protec- tion and need for order because of all the wild barbarians. so they relied on the church to give them protection and law 20 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f for them to abide by. Since it fell there was No Central Government/Defense Charlemagne united all the christen lands of Europe with the help of Pope Leo the third. They created the Roman Catholic Church and Charlemagne became the em- peror and the Pope was granted higher power than what that position had be- fore. It also lead to a new type of govern- ment called feudalism. Feudalism was a great system for them because they werent the biggest empire so they needed someone to watch over the land, and it also provided large amounts of money for them. A monarch grants land to another person that they may make a manor on, then they may say to someone they can use this land but I want this in re- turn, this land is called a ef. Rome fal- ling was one of the most important events in history because it lead to feudal- ism and the church. If Rome never fell their might of not ever been feudalism. The Decline of Feudalism These events were leading away from feu- dalism because they were opening up dif- ferent opportunities that were being taken and none of them contributed for feudalism. The Magna Carta established the idea of rights and liberties that the king cannot violate. It also afrmed that monarchs should rule with the advice of the governed. This strengthened English common law and the role of judges and 21 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f juries. It gave a voice in government to common people as well as lords. The peas- ants wanted rights so they started the English peasants war. Peasants met with the king to get rights instead of having no say in anything. These ideas became part of the tradition that later gave rise to mod- ern democratic institutions. Also the bu- bonic plague / Black Death contributed to the end of feudalism because it was causing thousands of deaths which was taking away from the amount of farmers knights and other higher ranked citizens. Then there was the hundred years war when France and England fought for land. England didnt have enough knights to go ght so they started to pay peasants to ght for them. the English made the long bow that was a more pow- erful solution to warfare and it was also easier to use. the English army was made up of lightly armored knights, foot soldiers, and archers armed with long- bows (Frey 59). It was a great advantage but then Joan of the arc a patriotic girl led France to victory over the English and they seized land from England. The plague made the church less powerful be- cause they thought it was punishment from god. The war took away from the churches power because they were recruit- ing with money instead of speech. And the political change was taking power from the church saying that they couldnt do anything they wanted to. These events all lead to the end of feudalism because 22 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f each event was leading away instead of towards feudalism. These events were the end of feudalism al- though some of the people might have not realized it, they were. Political change in England was the main culprit in the fall of feudalism. These events lowered the power in the king and the church that made the people not believe them to be so powerful. The people had more rights than before, which made people question the church, which was the downfall of feu- dalism. Magna Carta gave power to all the lower ranked citizens in the empire. Middle Ages Concluding Question These events were the end of feudalism al- though some of the people might have not realized it, they were. John F. Kennedy CHAPTER 5 24 Power of Ideas Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Humanisms Impact on Europe European society changed in many ways because of new questions, ideas, and ways of thinking that were brought by the humanist mindset of the renaissance. Government was challenged by the peo- ple because they started to think why they had all these different rules and ideas. They looked back at the past and started to question the authority of church. They also discovered different types of government like democracy. In- stead of being born into your social status you had the ability to move up if you had the required skills and ability to do the job. Painting wasn't focused on mostly re- ligious topics and everyone was made so no one would be standing over each other unlike the highly ranked people in the mid-ages. There was a bigger focus on art in the humanistic age because they started to make 3D paintings and stand- alone sculptures with more detail. people started to write about more topics besides religious topics and they expanded on hu- man knowledge because they didn't just relate to roman philosophers unlike the feudalistic empire. There were also many advances in science because there were scientists like Leonardo Da Vinci which started to study the topics of human anat- omy and started to create new inventions. they also started to preform experiments to gain information about what they were doing. Overall there were many changes 25 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f in the empire that made humanism what it is. Humanist Ideas in My Civilization Humanism would change my govern- ment system rules to not be as strict as they are now but my rules are fair and provide fair sentences. although my rules may be cut down it would make it not so dangerous to steal something but since we have a new system the citizens aren't as likely to do it because the rules provide a fair system of government. although it would be a big change it would make a brighter future for our civilization. hu- manism would not have many effects to the belief system but it would change a few things. punishments would be changed to not be so drastic as they were but it wouldn't be a drastic change. The Protestant Reformation Figure - Post 1 Indulgences were questionable teachings of the church, it was unfair for the poor people because they couldnt buy these passes but the rich people could. There was also simony, which also corrupted the church, a rich person could buy their way into any rank they want but a person that has ben with the church for 10 years wont get the rank. Jan Hus believed that the church should focus on Jesus as the center not the pope. But the church didnt like this idea so they burned him because he had different thoughts than the 26 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f church. Because Martin Luther believed that the church was corrupt and that there rules should be changed. He nailed his 95 arguments against the church on the walls of one of the churches and showed the public what was wrong with the church. the church wanted to kill him, but he was too popular so they had to let him go and he went into hiding until there was a war between the german princes and the peasants but he sup- ported the princes because he knew that he could make a standing against the church. Famous Renaissance Figure - Post 2 Leonardo da Vinci, I was born in a village near Florence on 1452, and died in 1519. When I was a teenager I trained in Flor- ence under a master sculptor and Painter. All my life I studied subjects including art, music, math, anatomy, botany, archi- tecture, and engineering. I worked as an artist, engineer, and architect for kings, popes, and wealthy patrons in my later years. 27 Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f CHAPTER 6 28 Bibliography & images Jeremy Scarth Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:18:19 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:af:0f Bibliography Frey, Wendy.
