Day 12 OBJECTIVE Students will resume work with constructions and apply it to finding specific locations to maps. STANDARDS Common Core Content Standards Geometry: Congruence 10. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half the length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point; the altitudes of a triangle meet at a point.
Geometry: Congruence Make geometric constructions. 12. Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment; and constructing a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.
ISTE Technology standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity c. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning PREPARATION Students will need to be able to use Google Maps or another mapping software to print out a map. It will be important to have access to enough printer friendly devices and printers so that students may each print out a map. It will be important to understand options for printer friendly pages so that students will know how to obtain a usable map for their constructions. It may be necessary to use a computer lab for this assignment in order to print out maps. GUIDED INSTRUCTION STUDENT WORK Set up IPads and class computers so that students can print from them. Find printer friendly options on Google maps. Tell students to think of locations that are special, interesting to them, or that they would like to visit. The locations should be close enough on a map that a printer friendly map can be printed. Allow students to access Google maps and find their locations. Once students have picked their locations they will find them on the map and print it. After printing the map, have students draw a triangle using the three locations. Students will use their compass and straightedge to locate the orthocenter of their triangle. Walk around the room and make sure students are finding the altitudes of the triangle. After they located the orthocenter they will locate the center on Google maps and take a screen capture of their center. Students will once again find one last location in Google maps. Students will need to reverse engineer a triangle by making their fourth location the incenter of the triangle. Students should be encouraged to use Twitter to help each other complete constructions. Have students scan or take a photo of their work and pin to their boards. Hardcopies should be turned in the next day.
Students will pick three locations and print out the map. They should make sure to use printer friendly options. Students will use constructions to find the orthocenter of the triangle.
Again they will print out a map of their location with enough space to draw around it. Students will use their knowledge of creating congruent angles to find the incenter of the triangle. Students can use twitter to help each complete constructions. Students will scan or take a picture of their maps and upload it to their Pinterest account. Students will turn in hard copies. STUDENT PRODUCTS Students will have a map with constructions used to find the center of their triangle A screenshot of their center location A fourth map where they reverse engineered a triangle using properties of an incenter.
