Well as we come into the middle of 2014 and we wonder where the first half went,
welcome to the June newsletter.
A reminder from the HRCAV to keep yourselves up to date with competition rule
changes. These are listed in Chaff Chat each month and are available via the HRCAV
Web site. Remember its your responsibility to know the rules.

Were still locking down the date of the June Rally at this time so stay tuned.
Instructors TBA. Dont forget to fill your Rally Interest Form out via the Wezza
Website.
And for those living under a rock, the Melbourne International Horse Trials is on at
Wezza this weekend. This year the Dressage and Showjumping will be held on the Polo
Field and the Trade Village will be located in front of the old Admin Building.
The weather also looks as though it will be good for Sundays Cross Country and
Mondays Showjumping

JULIE MILLS AND DUKE



























I purchased my Duke at the young age of 15 months. After
breaking Duke in myself in 2008, we began our partnership and
training.
We started competing at HRCAV dressage events from 2008 to
2010. Starting out in Level 5 and by the time we hit 2010 we
had reached Level 1.

Duke: hes AN 8 year old , 17. 2 HH pure bred Clydesdale gelding - 2014 has just
started campaigning at EA - Advanced, schooling PSG and some of the Grand Prix
movements.

We have had so many more highlights in our career; with many wins and many placings; including qualifying for both State and
National Dressage Championships in Medium. (2013)
It is not often we don't finish in the top 6 riders.
My aim for the very near future is to qualify and be out competing at FEI, PSG and then eventually to reach Grand Prix. He is the only
pure bred Clydesdale in Victoria out successfully competing at this level. As you can see from the pictured he is already showing a real
talent for passage and piaffe.


For the past 2 years I have been lucky enough to be sponsored by Cedar Lodge Equine
Products. They have been very supportive of Duke and I through our journey.








MAY RALLY REPORT
What a blast our May rally was! The sun was shining and warm, with only a light breeze, the perfect
weather to ride in!

Our SJ and XC lessons instructed by our very own Jen Mainland! Those who joined in on the XC
lesson had a brilliant time flying over the XC course (in a controlled manner of course!) and tackling
some very challenging fences from Gr 5 height, all the way through to Gr 1!

The SJ was located in the SJ warm up arena where Jen set up a small course for the lesson. There
were many challenges to face with the course and every rider had to be switched on and listening to
instruction to get around cleanly, which they did! The jumps were slowly raised higher until they
were at Gr 1 height and everyone got to watch the fearless Steph W and Tarks sprout wings and
soar over the enormous fences! There were lots of 'oohs' and 'aahs' to be heard!

Thank you to everyone who showed that WCEC team spirit and helped set up and pack up the
showjumps. Many hands make light work!

WCEC decided to step away from the normal dressage lessons this rally and hold a Dressage
Training Day instead. Those members who participated learned one of the HRCAV dressage tests
and performed it for HRCAV Judge Catherine Shelley, as they would in competition. Catherine then
gave the rider feedback and ways to bring up their score before the combination got to ride their test
again, but this time applying the feedback given.

It was a fantastic way for many riders from experienced dressage competitors to those who had
ever ridden a test before to ask questions and get clarifications on movements, understand how a
test should be ridden, what to do if their horse was being less than co-operative and what they
should practice on at home. WCEC received fantastic feedback from the day and every participant
said they found it be hugely beneficial!

We also had a wonderful prize for the combination that showed the most improvement during the
training day. The very lucky winner was Lorraine! Congratulations Lorraine, we hope you put that
saddle blanket to good use at a dressage competition, where you can also put into practice
everything Catherine taught you!

HELS AND HECKLE

Its been a hugely challenging time for me on a
personal level and I have moved away from the
area where Werribee Central is located.
However I remain a member of the club and I was
coerced (or shoved) into the final round of the
South Eastern Dressage Club Autumn Series at Ayr
Hill and was pretty shocked at our results.
Heckle had a sensational warm up......wish it could
have been one of the tests.......and came out with
8th place in 5.1 and =4th in 5.2, with an overall of
=6th. Totally shocked.
We even got a mammoth 70.00% in the second
test. Got a lovely green rosette for the 4th place
and had a great day. And were proud to fly the
Werribee Central banner.

WCEC HIGH POINT AWARD
JANE GRIFFIN MEMORIAL AWARD
MICHELE DEPASQUALE DRESSAGE AWARD

Thanks to the ongoing sponsorship of Mal Byrne Saddlery and John and Dee Griffin, the Club has three
annual awards. These are the Highpoint Award, the Jane Griffin Memorial Award and the Michele
Depasquale Dressage Award.
The prize will consist of an embroidered rug to each of the award winners and is presented at the December
Christmas Rally each year and runs from 1
st
November each year to the 31
st
October the following year.
Highpoint Award
This will cover all official disciplines of the HRCAV. You must compete for the club to be eligible for this
award and be able to provide proof of points should it be requested. You must submit your points to the
Secretary as soon as convenient with the following information. Name, Horse, Event, Class, Placing. If you
are competing with two horses, the n you will have progressive points for both horses.
You must also attend three rallies during the course of the year to be eligible for this award and a full WCEC
member and not an associate member.
Points per placing:

Dressage: Highest test placed on the day. i.e. if you place 2

and 4

, then you must submit your second
placing and gain three points.
Showing: Highest placing on the day for events. Rider, Ridden Mount and Mount Most Suitable for your

in Mount Most Suitable, you would submit your first
placing for Rider Class.
Combined Training, Show Jumping, Horse Trials, Navigation Rides: With these disciplines you would submit
your highest placing on the day.









JANE GRIFFIN MEMORIAL AWARD

This award was created in the memory of Jane Griffin who was a regular Showjumping instructor at our club
rallies. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have lessons with her fondly remember her very assertive
and loud teaching style, the joy at achieving things we didnt think we could achieve and every lesson started
with Janes three rules of showjumping

Dont Fall Off
Look Good Doing it
Unfortunately Jane lost her life in tragic circumstances in June 2009. This award will be decided by the
showjumping instructor at each rally by nominating a member who they believe is worthy of the award, a
person who listens, tries hard and improves throughout the lesson.
MICHELE DEPASQUALE DRESSAGE AWARD
Michele now spends her time between working full time, running a Market Garden in Werribee South and
supporting her youngest son Anton in his bid to be the next Mark Webber. And young Anton is definitely on
his way.
Michele founded WCEC back 2005 wanting to locate a club at the National Equestrian Center. Over the
years Michele has dedicated so much of her time to the running of the club that it now takes four us to do
what she used to do.






When Michele made the difficult decision to resign from the Committee in 2012 and take a hiatus from the
club we as a Committee wanted a way to thank and honour Michele for the all the hard work she did for us.
Everything from almost running Barastoc singlehandedly to being Treasurer, President and Secretary in her
many roles.
Like the Jane Griffin Award, the Dressage award will be decided by the dressage instructor at each rally by
nominating a member who they believe is worthy of the award, as person who listens and improves
throughout the lesson. This year will be the inagual award.
