PROCEDURE FOR PLANTING SEEDLING TRAYS
Updated June 2011

Materials

Potting mix (accessed from soil bunker)
Clean sterile 64 cell seedling trays
Tags
Seed sample for testing

Method

Ensure workbench is clean and free from seed, soil particles and potential contaminants.
Fill trays with potting mix, brush off extra mix and press soil firmly.
Plant 2 3 seeds per cell and brush over a thin layer of potting mix to cover the seed.

Write clear, anti-fade labels for each tray including variety, sample or lot number, date
planted and staple tags to each tray. Give variety a number on tag for easier identification
when assessing. Eg. Hyola 432 (1), Hyola 61 (2) etc.

Lay trays out on capillary tables 6 trays/table. Lightly water. Automatic watering will
commence via floats on tables when water nozzle is turned on.

Clean down work area thoroughly. Be aware of contamination risk in each step carried
out and be thorough in precautions taken to reduce contamination risk. For example,
keep potting mix bin away from work area when brushing excess mix off bench to
prevent seed contamination of fresh potting mix.

Plants can be thinned back to 1 plant per cell after emergence. After thinning, an
application of a fungicide is applied (Fongarid by Ciba Geigy) 1g/1L mixed in a
watering can and lightly watered in to prevent any root or stem rot.

Record planting date and population in the QC database under the correct growerline as
soon as possible following tray planting to signal the commencement of testing.
